Perhaps the best self-help book ever written

I generally think self-help books promise a lot more than they deliver. I've come to believe that this book is an absolute game changer in the world of behavioral medicine.

So, how do you know if this book will be helpful for you?

"Self-Therapy" is based on Internal Family Systems therapy. (Think--a system of therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, but with a rather different approach.) It is geared toward individuals who do what I call "triggering". If you tend to have very turbulent relationships, or keep rehashing past offenses in your head, or get told by your spouse that you act like you have two personalities, or are a pathological people-pleaser, or find yourself frequently repeating that behavior you decided never to do again, or have panic attacks over trivial threats, or are easily hurt or offended, or have been told you are manipulative, or have overwhelming fears of not being believed, being abandoned, not being good enough, etc, then you are probably "triggering". As you progress toward middle age, you will likely find that these behaviors become increasingly problematic in your relationships. If this sounds like you, consider getting this book.

I am a family physician and was becoming frustrated with an inability to help my patients with (axis II) personality disorders understand and heal their condition. Meds don't work very well and traditional counseling is only marginally better. I knew how to recognize a patient with a personality disorder, but I didn't understand what caused it or how to explain it to a patient in a way that they 1) believed me, and 2) understood what I was talking about. These patients are often misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, and before I found IFS I almost never saw someone recover or improve.

A social worker directed me to do some research into Internal Family Systems therapy and I eventually stumbled across "Self-Therapy". This book not only helps you diagnose yourself, (ie. "what is causing me to feel and act this way?") but also how to treat yourself. I am gradually coming to believe that Internal Family Systems therapy is the only type of therapy that is more than marginally effective for healing this type of emotional injury. I find myself recommending this book to one of my patients on at least a weekly basis. It doesn't hold the solution for every emotional problem, but it's one of the best tools I've found for my mental health arsenal. If nothing else, it can really help you understand others' behavior better.

I initially read this book trying to help my patients. In the end it has also helped my family, my marriage, and my personal happiness. Color me impressed.

High quality book

I think the book is excellent - I've already recommended it to numerous people. Internal Family Systems is the best thing I'm come across in the psych world in the course of reading a fair number of psych books in my 44 years, and this book by Earley does a great job of explaining it.

IFS is not the simplest thing in the world to explain in writing, yet the book nails it by combining clear illustrations, good organization and thoughtful writing. It also has numerous exercises you can do yourself. And a section of tips on doing IFS with a partner, and on working with a therapist.

The book is written to be accessible to the general public, which is the only broad-based introductory IFS book I know of yet that is in good measure written for the public (i.e. not written for therapists). It's largely written for the person who will be going through therapy or wants to practice IFS on their own or with a partner. I think even having the awareness of the concepts and info will help most people, even if they don't do the exercises.

The great thing about the above is it gives IFS a better chance of making a bigger impact on the world than is possible simply through therapists. There are only so many therapists, and only some know much IFS and relatively few have been trained in it, or are now slated to be trained.

Besides letting more people do it on their own, I think IFS therapists in general will benefit from it because I think a good number of people who read it and find IFS appealing will at some point in the upcoming years of their life will go to an IFS therapist to experience the added benefits of therapy or tackle harder things that need a therapist. Kind of like how the Grateful Dead became the highest grossing tour band in the U.S. because they let people record their concerts and share copies for free. More people got copies of the music, liked it and then went to concerts, bought t-shirts and bought CDs. The more people who are introduced to IFS through books like this, the more the average IFS therapist will have people knocking on their door looking to do it.

One small note is that while the tagline of the book mentions "healing your inner child," my impression is that according to IFS and to the author (Earley) and my own experience of myself, most people are healing several inner parts of themselves, including some adult parts that are not serving them well. While I don't care about sub-titles, I thought I would mention the above to clarify in case it's needed for anyone that this is not some half-baked new age book talking only about healing an inner child. As the first half of the tagline conveys, IFS works with all parts of our personality, and tries to get all aspects of who we are more healthy to better serve us. Healing the childish parts of us that are often unconscious is certainly an important part of the process, and the book is a multi-dimensional approach to those parts and other parts of who we are.

In case you haven't heard of IFS, it is a respected psychological system and is used primarily by licensed therapists and clinics, and recommended by many respected leaders in the field. The founder of it was the co-author of one of the best selling textbooks on marriage and family therapy used by universities, and who taught at one of the top schools in the country. It's not a passing fad and not a new-age gimmick with the aim of selling books. IFS is not family therapy - Schwartz used the systematic thinking common in family therapy to discover that we have our own internal set of sub-personalities or parts that combine to form who we are. Often some of the parts are on track and some are not, and need some assistance from us in coming to serve us better.

The book focuses on how you can learn what the parts of yourself are, how they operate, and how you can help them learn and mature to become better at serving you. Doing so takes time. Don't expect to read this book or any book, and have easy answers or have most things figured out just like that. It takes ongoing time and attention. My guess is that most people will need to read the book again in a year and delve deeper in the second time.

Overall, the writing in Self-Therapy is lucid and understandable, without dumbing down. I think the book would also be helpful to therapists looking for a strong intro to IFS, or to therapists who know some about IFS and want to know more. When you consider that the founder Richard Schwartz was able to help a lot of people when he first started doing IFS, and it was only part-way developed when he first started doing it and he had no book with lots of details explaining it to help him, I would assume that a high quality therapist could read this book and begin using some of the concepts in their practice.

The missing manual for my brain

Reading Self-Therapy was extremely illuminating--as though someone had given me the missing manual for my brain. I now have difficulty imagining how I functioned without this understanding and perspective, and I think the short answer is that I didn't function nearly as well. This book is a reliable, straightforward set of instructions for transforming any unhealthy behavior or thought pattern, and releasing any unwanted emotional response. If that sounds too good to be true, it's also completely fun to do the work: I get to go into a trance state, peek behind the curtain of my mind, become conscious of what is driving my behavior, and solve the problem by being creative with imagery.

This book is a very clearly written and easy to understand set of instructions for doing IFS therapy, which is so powerful that I am somewhat confused about why everyone isn't using it. Self-Therapy profoundly improved my effectiveness at accomplishing my goals and increased my overall sense of well-being. I recommend it to everyone I know.

If you do read the book, my one recommendation is to actually try the process outlined within on yourself, preferably with a friend to help. It took me a while to figure out how to use the system, but ever since I have done so I have a method I know will work for gaining clarity, changing behavior patterns, and have fun while doing it, so no problem in my life feels intractable and suffering seems entirely optional. It's that powerful. Let this book change your life.

The principal actions about which his narrative revolves are the notable battles around Plevna in 1877. To enable readers more fully understand the battles and campaign, Charles Ryan and John Sandes' account is accompanied here by an overview of the battle by William V. The broader conflict, fought between the Turkish Ottoman Empire and Russia, was motivated in part by aspirations for independent nationhood in the Balkan region, following centuries of Turkish domination, and by the desire of Russia to regain some of the losses she had sustained during the Crimean War some twenty years previously. For all those with an interest in the many small wars in Europe during the 19th century, that created the nation states we know today, this is an essential book in every way.

Outstanding Translation and a Whole Lot MORE!!

As anyone can tell from my previous reviews, I don't pull punches or spare criticism when I encounter a TCM or Classical Chinese medical book that fails to deliver. Well, this delivers bigtime and I'm very pleased with it. The organization is didactic, the translations appear reasonable and, thank goodness, the full Hanzi, fully accented PinYin and the translation are close by and easily accessible.

It is obvious that meticulous scholarship went into the production of this book and it should prove to be the standard book on this topic for some time to come.

As an unexpected bonus, the reader is treated to an absolutely superb chapter towards the end of the book on the topic of a kind of introduction to the nuances of classical Chinese and the typical grammatical constructs and idioms characteristic of medical books of this era. It is one of the finest introductions I've seen on the topic and an unexpected treasure in a book filled with commentary, translations and explanations which make the work of the student a delight instead of an unending search through obscure dictionaries and readers.

As a graduate, not too long ago, of a medical college of Traditional Chinese medicine, I can say that this book will have a central spot on my medical bookshelf for some time to come!

Difficult to sort through

For me, information in this book is organized in a way that makes its very difficult to differentiate the specificities between syndromes within each of the 6 stages. I think it is probably true that this book is an accurate translation of the Shang Han Lun, but what I was looking for was a source that would break down the Shang Han Lun into a simpler terms. Basically found Mitchell's book very difficult to sort through, and not helpful for studying.

"A Readers" review is factually incorrect and misleading

As the publisher of this book, there are several factual errors in the anonymous review posted here that I would like to address.

First, the "translation of a translation" comment is misleading. First century texts such as the Shang Han Lun are not books one pulls off a shelf. They were typically prepared on silk or bamboo, and their content is today known via a process called "collation" where archeological artifacts and references in later texts are studied to create a best possible idea of the orginal. The Shang Han Lun Yi Shi, on which this text is based, has been considered the standard by scholars for some time.

Secondly, the "translation of a translation" issue is germane only in texts that do not contain the source Chinese. Not only does this text contain the source Chinese, there are appendicies that contain a ground-breaking study of the Shang Han Lun terminology, and alternate orderings of the Chinese text. Importantly, the translators decisions are openly and transparently justified giving readers the opportunity and tools they need to decide questions for themselves. In the case of this translation, each passage in the text is accompanied, not only by the English translation, but by commentary on the terminology and translational decisions.

As regards the anonymous writer's contention that the commentaries are not by the author. This is simply false. Feng Ye, Md. Phd., is listed as an author; he is a professor at Chang Gung Medical College where he supervises and instructs graduate Chinese medicial doctors in a teaching hospital. Dr. Wiseman, the primary linguist, also teaches at Chang Gung Medical College and has widely published not only the term set but also the research on which this translation is based.

Everyone will make their own decision as to which Shang Han Lun best suits their needs, but that decision should not be informed by "a Reader's" factual errors.

For readers of Ogri cartoons...

You know...way back when, when Paul Sample was doing Ogri cartoons for Motorcyle Weekly (I think) and we all stopped to smile at the antics therein. A lovely collection devoted to an iconic presence in the lives of motorcylists of the '70's and '80's. Some of the themes are not quite PC these days, but are in no way offensive - more period pieces that reflect the times as they were. Let's face it, Ogri wasn't exactly a PC kind of bloke anyway! A nice read in a comfy chair with a cup of tea when you take a break from one of those repair manuals you would normally be reading when the bike won't behave (owners of bikes contemporary with these cartoons, take note...). A mate did try to borrow it. No way! Make sure your copy doesn't get nicked too!

The biker we all wanted to be

Bike magazine is currently the highest-selling rag in the UK. I have read it since 1974 and still enjoy it. The dirty little secret is Ogri, always hidden on the last page. This is what it was all about, Ogri's latest run-in with the law, the extent his idiot friend Malcom could screw up some basic two-wheeled task, a fly on the wall's view of blue-collar biking in England. It's not politicly correct, it doesn't always have a happy ending BUT it is always pee-in-your-Belstaffs funny, and still the reason I read Bike to this day.

Good Book to get you started...

I liked this book. It was informative and contained a good amount of Shemin's experiences to color the text and information given. I do have a problem however, and it's not with the book, but rather the readers who have such negative opinions about these types of books. One of the overwhelming themes that I read in these people's negative reviews is "s/he didn't tell me how"...what are you people talking about?
Shemin told you what he did...he interviewed two hundred landlords and tenants...he looked at houses and investment properties for six months before making an offer. Even he said it didn't need to take that much time, but fear held him back. He told you how to evaluate a property, things to look for. He even provides a checklist. He told you that first and foremost "HE MADE A DECISION TO ACHIEVE FINANCIAL FREEDOM WITH REAL ESTATE". Yes, he made a decision. Any succesful person will tell you, once you make the decision, the hows become easy.
It seems like people want a book to tell them why they should do this, not how. The hows are in this book. The hows are in any book. That's why they're referred to as "How-To's". The "why" to do something is for you and you alone to figure out. Don't buy anybody's book if you're looking for why. I read the same kind of negative opinions when I look at bad reviews of Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad Poor Dad" stuff. What do you want these books to do? Go out and find the properties, get the financing, find the tenants and collect money for you?
Shemin's book is good. I will tell you to stay from Tyler Hicks' works. He's nothing but an informercial in book form. But I like what the author has to say. But, none of these books will do anything for you until...you...do...it!

very informative for the rookie real estate investor

I just started to become interested in real estate and I found this book very informative. One section that stands out in my mind that I will use in the future is the section that gives tips on how to inexpensively dress up a house to get a higher price. Is very realistic about what to expect concerning life as a landlord, gave tips on how to "flip" houses (for the more experienced investor)and advantages and disadvantages of holding on to property or "flipping" property. I would recommend this book to new investors.

I truly enjoy reading this book. It demonstrates the use of common sense and giving back. And, that is how I actually starting in the real estate field. I have over sixteen years of property management experience and a successful owner, and investor in rental properties. And, this book has made a great impact on me. I would recommend it to anyone who is a novice or itermeditate and want to learn more about investing, owning, and flipping properties. It's definately a realistic book. Others, I would strongly recommend would be Lanlording, Find It, Buy It, anf Fix It is great and The New No-Non Sense Lanlord by Jergerson. You will never want to resell these books.
