The First Dirty Pair Episode
By FredTownWard
It happens during a secret meeting between Crusher Joe's crew and a local informant at of all things a drive in theater in the original movie. While negotiations take place in the foreground, in the background on the screen the Dirty Pair are depicted in their usual position: hopelessly outnumbered and blasting away for their lives. Dirty Pair fans should add a star, but everyone else can watch and wonder what went wrong, why the Dirty Pair series succeeded: 3 movies, 26 TV episodes, 10 OVA episodes, and a 16 episode reboot OVA series, while Crusher Joe had only 1 movie and 2 OVA episodes before fading away.
To begin with these series are surprisingly similar. Both involve private agents called in when local governments are unable to do their jobs. 3WA agents are called in for police work against super villains while Crushers are called in for more general troubleshooting, but since there are always super villains involved when Crusher Joe is involved, it wouldn't take much to rewrite all of the Crusher Joe episodes into Dirty Pair episodes or vice versa. So why didn't the Crusher Joe series succeed?
Well, to begin with is the Crusher Joe team: the brash young leader, the crafty old cyborg muscle, the rich girl with a past, and the overly energetic kid. Though this formula has been somewhat done to death in the years since, it was relatively new at the time and certainly can be done well as fans of Cowboy Bebop well know. The problem? Despite longer than normal run times, virtually nothing is revealed about the main characters; even my list of characterizations above comes from sources other than the shows. Beyond some hints about Joe's difficult relationship with his father in the movie we literally learn NOTHING about our heroes in 4 solid hours. In contrast we learn more about the Dirty Pair in most any given single half hour episode.
Content wise the Crusher Joe pieces combine both more violence with wacky comedy, something which doesn't quite work IMHO, and Joe's "interest" in female guest stars is contrasted with practically no evidence of his alleged romance with Alfin, which comes mostly from the untranslated novels.
This is not to say that the stories are unwatchable, far from it, but I found myself astonished at being bored at times by action films. With all their craziness the Dirty Pair (except in the reboot) made me care about what happened to them. In contrast I cared more about the guest stars than the main cast of Crusher Joe.
Note: Since it is hard to find, I'll note that the "hidden trailer" is found under the Language Options menu on the OVA's disc. Move to the Main Menu selection and right arrow key, lighting up Talos' belt buckle. Select this and it plays the trailer for "The Ice Prison" OVA.
Note: The rest of the Dirty Pair episodes work out chronologically like this: "Affair of Nolandia" from Dirty Pair: Original Features DVD Collection, Dirty Pair: The Original TV Series, Part 1, Dirty Pair: The Original TV Series, Part 2, "Project Eden" from the features set, Dirty Pair: Original OVA Series DVD Collection, "Flight 005 Conspiracy" from the features set, and finally the reboot series Dirty Pair Flash DVD Collection.

Good stuff.
By Raisuli the Magnificent
Designed as a kind of law enforcement recruitment story for the young Japanese male, Crusher Joe tells the story of an independent operator in a service that operates outside normal military or law enforcement regimes, and tackles problems that no one else can or will due to international agreements.
That's kind of high minded, but that's essentially the design behind this piece of anime. Otherwise it's just a rockin' action-adventure toon that takes place in outer space; i.e. sci-fi.
There's a little bit of nudity, lots of violence, some of which is not very kid friendly, but created to appeal to pre-teens and teenagers a like. Space ships, dog fights, fire fights, an over sexed robot, a pretty blonde princess ... what's not to like?
The feature film is a bit long, and the anime, like all Japanese animation, falls a little short here and there in presentation, but overall it's a solid movie. The two one-hour films in this edition are a little sharper in presentation, and carry the Crusher's saga forward as Joe, Talos, Alfin and Dongo tackle more challenges; notably tackling corruption and criminality.
I bought this when it first came out, which is about a third or so of the current price listed here. I'm sorry Animeigo is not publishing this title anymore, because it really is a gem for anime fans.
If you get a chance, check it out.
Good stuff.

Superb Japanese animated space action in 2-disc set
By Brian Camp
The good news about this set is that it contains all the Crusher Joe that's been produced: one two-hour movie and two one-hour OAV episodes. The bad news is that there's no more Crusher Joe to be had. Which is a shame for anime fans, since these four solid hours of Japanese animated space action are as well-written and beautifully animated as any comparable episodes from the Yamato, Gundam and Macross space series.
The 1983 movie (which clocks in at 2 hours and 10 minutes) introduces the Crusher Joe team, led by 19-year-old Joe, whose team of "Crushers," independent civilian contractors, do odd, often dangerous space jobs that can't be trusted to the USF (United Space Force). Joe's team consists of 17-year-old Alfin, a cute blonde; 15-year-old Ricky; and the massive 52-year-old cyborg, Talos. The sprawling plot, which takes us all over the galaxy, involves a cargo--a cryo-suspension chamber housing a female patient--that is stolen out from under Joe's nose, causing him and his crew to be suspended. To clear his name and retrieve the cargo, Joe and his team track down the space pirates behind the theft and get mixed up in internal politics on the planet where the pirates are based. The first half lets us get to know the characters, showing them interact in their downtime so we become involved in their story. The second half is almost pure explosive action and never lets up.
The 55-minute made-for-video episodes, from 1989, are "The Ice Prison" and "The Ultimate Weapon: Ash." Both focus on more concentrated sci-fi storylines and less on the characters and their interactions. The first is about an ice-filled planetoid used as a jail for political prisoners captured during trouble on planet Oro, where the populace is seeking to overthrow ruler Ghellstan. When the prison is knocked out of its orbit and starts to get pulled towards the planet, Joe and his team are called in to set things right. Unfortunately, they soon find they've been set up as part of a power ploy by the planet's dictator. "The Ultimate Weapon" has Joe and his team sent to a distant planet to rescue an army major transporting a lethal, planet-destroying weapon who's been captured by renegade officers seeking to disrupt a peace process between two warring systems. Complicating matters is the presence on the planet of Cloakers, basketball-sized killing machines left over from an abandoned secret project, which are self-replicating and target any and all humans.
Both episodes are well-written and imaginatively designed and generate intense excitement and genuine suspense. The animation, particularly in the action scenes, is just first-rate and the mecha design simply spectacular. There is combat and gunplay aplenty but nothing that would surpass a PG-13 rating. The Crusher Joe films should be better known and more celebrated among anime fans since they easily rank with the top class of Japanese animated space/sci-fi action.
