Space Mission Engineering:The New SMAD is an entirely new approach to creating both a text and a practical engineering reference for space mission design. Just as space technology has advanced, the way we learn and work has changed dramatically in recent years. SME combines the best features of a traditional unified text and reference covering the entire field, an electronic version that does many of the calculations for you, and the web that allows regular updates and references to the vast literature base available online. Among the many features of this new approach are: Completely rewritten, updated, and expanded follow-on to the 3rd edition of Space Mission Analysis and Design, the most widely used text and reference in astronautics, covering a great many topics not previously covered, such as CubeSats, Inflatable Structures, Space Economics, End-of-Mission options, Space System Risk Analysis, and new, much more precise formulas for ground station and target coverage. Downloadable electronic spreadsheets for most of the numerical tables and plots in the book that let you, for example, calculate all of the critical parameters for orbits about the Sun, Moon, Earth, and any of the other planets, or even new planets, moons, or stars of your choosing. An annotated bibliography and references on the web that is updated as new references become available and that shows you where to get nearly all of the references with direct links for those available at no cost and where on the web to buy copyright books and professional papers not available for free. All of the cross referencing, careful definitions, and thoroughly explained equations that are the key ingredient of any high quality engineering text or reference, along with the wisdom and experience gained at substantial cost by some of most experienced and knowledgeable space system engineers in the world. Comprehensive -- in a poorly organized way
By Chris
Comparing "The New SMAD" to SMAD v3, this updated version has more content on the process side of aerospace engineering. Though it is a very good discussion, this book provides the same details on process and systems engineering that can be found in many other places.
The most disappointing item regarding the update: this text is no longer a handbook. Not even close. It is double the dimensions (literally) of the previous version. At larger than 9"x12"x2" and over 5 pounds, the editors completely failed at creating a concise handbook for students and engineers. Students need a book that can be easily carried; professionals need a text easily used as a reference off the shelf. The expansion of this updated SMAD fails at accomplishing either.
If you are looking for the most complete discussion for space mission analysis with good, not great depth: buy this version.
If you want a handbook, buy SMAD v3 or other texts.

Decent Overview, But Missing Claimed Online Support
By Franklin H. Williams, Jr.
I would recommend this book for someone who wants an overview of most of the BASICS of space engineering and design. Each area covered gives a decent overview of many of the general, underlying concepts involved. In none of the areas does the text go into sufficient detail to do any design that could survive a formal Preliminary Design Review, let alone a final design, on that specific implementation.
My biggest gripe with the text is not with the text itself. This text gives references to online tables and figures to supplement the text itself. Many of these tables and figures are NOT available. Within the first few months after the book was published I could understand this somewhat. It might have been a work in progress. It is now about three years after the book was published. There is *absolutely* no excuse for those tables and figures to not be online.

Poorly organized, poorly worded and too large
By B. Kester
I bought this book for classes in satellite design. This book is very poorly organized with WAY to many instances of "Go to this section" to find the answer. At times (probably hundreds throughout the book), the author even directs you to another book entirely (of course one that he has written) to find the information you're looking for. Additionally, you will sometimes be given a cryptic reference like "Eq. 5-5, end papers." In a normal and/or useful book, you would find that equation somewhere in chapter 5, but not so much here. I actually still haven't figured out where that particular equation is and am hoping that maybe Google will enlighten me. As the other reviewer has noted, this book seems to be comprehensive, but in a very disorganized way. Unless you need this book for a class, I would not recommend it.
