Hard Living on Clay Street: Portraits of Blue Collar Families, by Joseph T. Howell

In this revealing study of a white working class neighborhood in Washington, D.C., Howell shows us that there is more than one kind of blue collar worker in America today. Hard Living on Clay Street is about two very different blue collar families, the Shackelfords and the Mosebys. They are fiercely independent southern migrants, preoccupied with the problems of day-to-day living, drinking heavily, and often involved in unstable family relationships. Howell moved to Clay Street for a year with his wife and son and became deeply involved with the people, recording their story. As readers, we too become participants in the life of Clay Street, and not just observers, learning what "living on Clay Street" is all about.

Review
". . . it is above all an intensely immediate, even gripping, account of daily life among the white urban poor." -- Ms. Magazine

"Even more vivid than Tally's Corner, it follows real, if disguised, people through concretely realized days and years." -- The Washingtonian

"In living with and becoming part of what he studies, Howell developed an understanding and compassion that illuminates every page, and which dramatically raise Hard Living from the status of sociologic monograph to a much larger and deeper story of human motivation and striving." -- Rolling Stone

"Never again will you find yourself easily able to put down the people whose hopes and fears, dreams and disappointments, violences and loves, inhabit this book." -- The New Republic

"No soap opera tangles the gold web of life more effectively than these genuine humans do, and not half so fast." --Washington Post

Fascinating book- hard living people remind me of most of my relatives :) Well-written- I feel like I grew up across the street from these families.

Howell traces to southern and urban roots
By hackerman@ap.org
Howell is a Nashville prep school graduate who actively involvedhimself in the mid-1960s southern situation. He generated andcommunicated his love of human nature and his compassion for the downtrodden over a decade of study, working and writing. First, he did this under the tutelage of a master professor, Dr. William Goodykoontz, at Davidson College, then in civil rights efforts - marches in North Carolina and working in the non-violent civil rights efforts around Albany, GA, He studied at Union Theological Seminary and worked summers on the lower East Side of New York in a church mission and at the Housing and Urban Development agency of New York City,. It was in Washington, on a street where often-jobless West Virginians lived, that Howell, took up his pen. He was then a graduate student at the University of North Carolina, where he received his M A. in Urban Planning, and he recorded -- the lives, the loves, the thoughts, the disappointments of some people who lived next door, down the street and around the corner on this amazing street. These were people he really knew, and while pity would have been the normal reaction of many, Howell depicted the characters and the humor of everyman in each of them. His neighbors knew what he was doing, but viewed him not as a threat but as a colleague. When Howell returned to Clay Street 20 years after first publishing the book to update it, he was moved by their plight again. No little part of Clay Street was shared by Howell's wife, Embry, who played a critical role in the relationship the Howells had with the hard-living migrants. Howell today runs a housing and urban development company in Washington. As a writer, he doesn't need a Pulitzer. Other writers who follow in his footsteps need to aspire to a "Howell."

You'll Never Forget It
By A Customer
This one is too good to be out of print. Hope someone will re-print it.

"Clay Street" was written before the term "underclass" entered the popular vernacular, but the book is even more relevant now than it was in 1972 when it was first pulished. Howell followed the lives of two families of "hard living" whites who had migrated from the rural south to Washington DC. From a middle class point of view, their lives are horrifying, marked by an inability to plan, save, think about the future... Life is just one damn thing after another. Anyone who still thinks that there is not a "culture of poverty" should read "Clay Street."

"Clay Street" was often assigned as a college text in the 1970s, so copies can still be had on the used book market.
