An excellent resource for getting up-to-speed in LVC.

This book is an excellent place to start for students new to the field of Language Variation & Change. It begins at the beginning - explaining basic concepts, summarizing what has been accomplished by research so far (it's extremely up-to-date!), and providing reference after reference from the important names in the field. But it doesn't stop at merely an introduction. Further chapters delve deeply into specific variables - phonological, morpho-syntactic, even an entire chapter for "unusual" ones. In each, the reader is given the background necessary to understand how and why sociolinguists study them, and what can be gained as a result.
At times, the order in which information is presented feels unusual, but the fact remains that by the end of the chapter, readers have been given the data they need to continue. Tagliamonte raises the necessary questions, and gradually works the reader through the answers. Like a true researcher, at the end of each chapter she raises further questions, addressing the work that remains to be done. Other chapters are dedicated to in-depth explanations of data and methods, even including detailed instructions for statistical modeling. It's challenging for beginners, but written in a way that encourages them to stick with it.
It's also very personal. Tagliamonte freely references her own experiences in fieldwork, sharing countless notes and even tips for conducting research - something I've never seen in a textbook before! She has a whole section about how to conduct fieldwork, down to a list of instructions for how to achieve interviews through door-knocking. Each chapter on variables comes with detailed, specific tips for studying them. She also helpfully includes quizzes and exercise questions throughout, and lists of relevant background reading for the deeply curious. Overall, the reader is left with the feeling that Tagliamonte genuinely wants to encourage students to engage in the language of the world around them. The book is challenging, incredibly galvanizing, and easily illustrates the endless value of LVC research.
