The Name of the Wind (KingKiller Chronicles), by Patrick Rothfuss

My name is Kvothe.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature―the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man’s search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

“It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing…with true music in the words…. Wherever Pat Rothfuss goes…he’ll carry us with him as a good singer carries us through a song.” ―Ursula K. Le Guin, bestselling author and winner of the National Book Award

Amazon.com Review
Amazon.com's Best of the Year...So Far Pick for 2007: Harry Potter fans craving a new mind-blowing series should look no further than The Name of the Wind--the first book in a trilogy about an orphan boy who becomes a legend. Full of music, magic, love, and loss, Patrick Rothfuss's vivid and engaging debut fantasy knocked our socks off. --Daphne Durham

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Patrick Rothfuss

Q: Were you always a fan of fantasy novels?
A: Always. My first non-picture books were the Narnia Chronicles. After that my mom gave me Ihe Hobbit and Dragonriders. I grew up reading about every fantasy and sci-fi book I could find. I used to go to the local bookstore and look at the paperbacks on the shelf. I read non-fantasy stuff too, of course. But fantasy is where my heart lies. Wait... Should that be "where my heart lays?" I always screw that up.

Q: Who are some of your favorite authors? Favorite books?
A: Hmmm.... How about I post that up as a list?

Q: What are you reading now?
A: Right now I'm reading Capacity, by Tony Balantyne. He was nominated for the Philip K Dick award this last year. I heard him read a piece of the first novel, Recursion, out at Norwescon. I picked it up and got pulled right in. Capacity is the second book in the series. Good writing and cool ideas. Everything I've like best.

Q: How did Kvothe's story come to you? Did you always plan on a trilogy?
A: This story started with Kvothe's character. I knew it was going to be about him from the very beginning. In some ways it's the simplest story possible: it's the story of a man's life. It's the myth of the Hero seen from backstage. It's about the exploration and revelation of a world, but it's also about Kvothe's desire to uncover the truth hidden underneath the stories in his world. The story is a lot of things, I guess. As you can tell, I'm not very good at describing it. I always tell people, "If I could sum it up in 50 words, I wouldn't have needed to write a whole novel about it." I didn't plan it as a trilogy though. I just wrote it and it got to be so long that it had to be broken up into pieces. There were three natural breaking points in the story.... Hence the Trilogy.

Q: What is next for our hero?
A: Hmm..... I don't really believe in spoilers. But I think it's safe to say that Kvothe grows up a little in the second book. He learns more about magic. He learns how to fight, gets tangled up in some court politics, and starts to figure unravel some of the mysteries of romance and relationships, which is really just magic of a different kind, in a way.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The originality of Rothfuss's outstanding debut fantasy, the first of a trilogy, lies less in its unnamed imaginary world than in its precise execution. Kvothe ("pronounced nearly the same as 'Quothe' "), the hero and villain of a thousand tales who's presumed dead, lives as the simple proprietor of the Waystone Inn under an assumed name. Prompted by a biographer called Chronicler who realizes his true identity, Kvothe starts to tell his life story. From his upbringing as an actor in his family's traveling troupe of magicians, jugglers and jesters, the Edema Ruh, to feral child on the streets of the vast port city of Tarbean, then his education at "the University," Kvothe is driven by twin imperatives—his desire to learn the higher magic of naming and his need to discover as much as possible about the Chandrian, the demons of legend who murdered his family. As absorbing on a second reading as it is on the first, this is the type of assured, rich first novel most writers can only dream of producing. The fantasy world has a new star. (Apr.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Fantasy readers-a notoriously discerning group-tend to dole out praise judiciously, which makes the reception of The Name of the Wind, the first volume in Patrick Rothfuss's The Kingkiller Chronicle, that much more remarkable. Critics are already throwing around comparisons to some of the biggest names in fantasy, including George R. R. Martin, Tad Williams, the recently deceased Robert Jordan, and even Tolkien. They praise Rothfuss's fresh take on the genre's conventions, particularly a shifting narrative that keeps the action moving. At nearly 700 pages, The Name of the Wind isn't meant to be knocked off in a weekend. But readers who pick up Rothfuss now-and, according to critics, that won't be a small number-can say they knew him back when.

Well worth your precious reading hours
By Robin Hobb
It seems to me that every year there are more books I want to read and less time for me to read them. Because my time is limited, I'm guilty of picking up the books by my favorite authors first, and fitting in new authors only when it's convenient.

Due to a stroke of luck, I've had an advance copy of The Name of the Wind by my bedside for over six months, just waiting for me to open it. Unfortunately, deadlines of my own kept getting in the way. But in a way, it's lucky that I didn't crack this book until just a few days ago. If I'd had this tale to distract me, I'd have been even later getting my work done.

I loathe spoilers, so I'm not going to discuss the plot of this book. I will say it has all the things that I demand of a book. The characters are real, the action is convincing and it has a compelling story to tell.

One of the things I like best about this book is that the magic is absolutely rooted in the book's world. Nothing seems contrived; the consistency is excellent.

The characters are very well realized. That means that when the protagonist does something clever, it's believable. And when he does something youthfully dumb, it rings just as authentically true. Because the characters are real and the magic is true to its own world, I closed this book feeling as if I'd been on a journey with an entertaining new friend, rather than sitting alone looking at words on a page.

This one is well worth some of your precious reading time. I'll wager that the books to follow it will also be.

Amazingly good book for certain people
By Staniel
I've spent the past hour and a half reading all the negative reviews for this book and I've seen some patterns emerge. First, people criticize the book on matters of preference, not literary quality. Second, people have had a bad reading experience because they expected something different than what the book really is. The truth is, there are many 5 star reviews (that I think the book deserves) that are not written in 5 star fashion. Many people do not know how to properly describe the book in a way that helps possible readers know if they would like it or not.

Here's the thing. I like this book a lot. I think it is one of the best books I've ever read. Here is what it's not: A fast-paced novel, a novel about the epic world-changing deeds of a hero, completely original, for everyone. The novel is not about world-changing feats of heroism. It is a slow-paced book about the development of an incredibly intelligent, but relatively normal boy, how he becomes a legendary figure, and some of the problems he faces in fostering that reputation and living up to it in the end. It is not the most original fantasy novel to ever hit shelves. It's originality comes not from it's world or characters (for goodness' sake, look at the map with the book. It's obviously an adaptation of Europe. Just like middle earth or countless other fantasy settings). The originality comes from subject matter more focused on the coming of age of a young boy and how, due to the existence of his impressive intelligence and the existence of a logical type of magic, certain events shape him into a legendary figure. There are plenty of cliche plot points, but not ones that I couldn't fully relate to. That said, the character is a very intelligent, but often foolish and arrogant, teenage boy. Not everyone can relate to him, but that also doesn't make it a bad book.

What I loved about this book was the main character. I have read many fantasy books with unbelievable characters. Often times, their behavior seems overly emotional or angsty. When I think about the people I know, I feel like people are often times as irrational as characters in those books, but I tend to not be. I can't stand when character conflict is built up on small disagreements that would easily be solved if one person cleared up a misunderstanding by simply talking to the other party. Very few such situations arise in this book which makes me happy because I seldom let those situations arise in my own life. The love story, while simple puppy-love is something myself and all of my friends went through at some point in our teen years, and I love that the main character is afraid of failure and making mistakes. Often times his problems come from lack of action rather than stupidity or brashness. Almost every man, whether he admits it or not, has a deep fear of failure. Kvothe is so real on so many levels, and his actions follow logically with his personality. It was impossible for me not to get fully immersed in the story.

All of that said... one last thing. I would be remiss if I didn't also say that this is the first book I have read that made me cry since I read "Where the Red Fern Grows" in 5th grade. And I cried like a freaking baby.

A thought after reading the negative reviews...
By L. Boswell
I always read the negative reviews of books I liked. For one, I think people can be much more detailed about what they don't like than what they did. Second, I just want to know what made people dislike something I liked.

There seems to be an overall theme amongst the negative reviews that Kvothe is unlikable--but most of these reviews contradict themselves. They don't like him because he's arrogant, but then also complain that he's too perfect to be realistic and has no flaws. I think Rothfuss's intentions were to make Kvothe's arrogance one of his biggest flaws. Imagine you caught on to many subjects in school very fast, were number one in your class and had a relatively quick wit. You'd probably be arrogant, too, as I know the smart, popular people in my high school were. And it's Kvothe's arrogance that constantly gets him into trouble.

The theme of Rothfuss's book, to me, is the difference between the reality of a man's life and his actions, and the stories other men tell about him. That's why we begin with him in a quiet inn, then cut to local patrons telling wild tales. We are introduced to a character, The Chronicler, whose sole purpose in "life" is to find the truth about stories, to debunk myths and legends. But fantasy books *are* the stuff of myths and legends--dragons, fair maidens, faeries, wizards. So how do you tell the story of a renowned magical hero without the requisite exaggeration and outright lies? Without turning the hero into an unrealistic beacon of flawless unrelenting perfection? You tell both stories--the ones people want to believe, and the story that comes closest to the truth. And the truth is Kvothe is a rash, impulsive, sometimes selfish and very often stupidly arrogant man. These traits get him into endless trouble, which he sometimes weasels his way out of through his wit and talents.

You are given Kvothe's many legendary titles (like Bloodless) and then learn the slightly less-than-mystical reason why he was given that quasi-true moniker. What's masterful about Rothfuss's work here, however, is that even when you tear down the myths about Kvothe and get to the "real" story, Kvothe still emerges a hero. If that is too unbelievable for you, if it's not realistic for a character to be truly heroic and truly talented and truly great despite his flaws, then you won't like this story. It's just not cynical enough for you.

This book delivered on every promise!
By C. Brady
This book was perfect for my needs. First, it is a relatively fast read, which is great because I can rarely finish books due to my busy schedule. But, this one was well-written, very interesting, short and to the point so I read it twice. Second, I learned a great deal of additional information on how a large vocabulary correlates to so many other factors in life---from happiness to career success to general well-being. The 30-day program was a great way to organize the material---I followed it to the letter, reading and reviewing those words that corresponded to the particular day I was working on. After 30 days, I did feel I had a good handle on all the new words, and then re-read it on a plane ride, just to reinforce it. I'd highly recommend this if you are interested in the topic, want something that you can fit into your schedule, and want to learn a ton of great new ideas.

Fukuoka Prison, 1944. Beyond the prison walls, the war rages. Inside, a man is found brutally murdered. What follows is a searing portrait of Korea before their civil war, and a testimony to the redemptive power of poetry.

Watanbe Yuichi, a young guard with a passion for reading, is ordered to investigate a murder. The victim, Sugiyama, also a guard, was feared and despised throughout the prison and inquiries have barely begun when a powerful inmate confesses. But Watanbe is unconvinced; and as he interrogates both the suspect and Yun Dong-ju, a talented Korean poet, he starts to realize that the fearsome guard was not all he appeared to be...

As Watanbe unravels Sugiyama's final months, he begins to discover what is really going on inside this dark and violent institution, which few inmates survive: a man who will stop at nothing to dig his way to freedom; a governor whose greed knows no bounds; a little girl whose kite finds an unlikely friend. And Yun Dong-ju―the poet whose works hold such beauty the can break the hardest of hearts.

As the war moves towards its devastating close and bombs rain down upon the prison, Watanbe realizes that he must find a way to protect Yun Dong-ju, no matter what it takes. As he digs further and further in to his investigation, the young guard discovers a devastating truth.

Review
“Inspired by the too-brief life of Korean poet-hero Yun Dong-Ju, whose surviving verses are hauntingly interspersed throughout, this work is a magnificent testimony to the profound efficacy of literature and the liberating, life-saving act of reading. If Lee’s stateside debut is any indication of the quality of his other titles, English-language audiences should demand accessibility to more, also made available under the auspices of accomplished translator Kim, one hopes. For literary fiction groupies, thriller seekers, history aficionados, war voyeurs, all, this exquisite, electrifying discovery awaits.” (Library Journal (starred review))

“Lee’s U.S. debut is a breathtakingly beautiful novel that boasts a cerebral murder mystery and a rare look at the human impact of Japan’s colonialism in Korea. David Guterson’s Snow Falling on Cedars (1994) makes an excellent pairing, providing a contrasting, but also beautifully portrayed, exploration of the impact of Japan’s role in WWII.” (Booklist (starred review))

“A heart-wrenching novel with many unexpected twists.” (Sunday Times)

“A deeply touching tribute to the power of art. With stunning language―enhanced by an insightful translation, painfully resonant characters and heart-pounding suspense―Lee crafts a gripping, complex account of literature's ability to transform and unite those it touches. Marvelous. This is a book to savor from beginning to end.” (Shelf Awareness)

“What begins as a murder mystery becomes a story of heartbreak, of poetry, of humanity triumphant. It celebrates the power of words, in expressing hope, in giving voice to frustration and longing, in lending strength. Though the work of a prolific Korean author, the prose suffers no awkwardness through translation. It glows. Highly recommended.” (Historical Novel Society)

“This effective, elaborate historical novel is from Lee, a bestseller in his native South Korea. Readers will find Lee's novel to be a satisfying mystery supplemented by rich historical detail.” (Publishers Weekly)

“A rollicking good mystery tale. It is also a volume of poetry, with heartbreaking verses of love and loss set against the backdrop of war. The Investigation is nearly impossible to review in a paragraph; even a whole page wouldn’t do it justice. Read it, you’ll understand.” (BookPage)

A Korean Steig Larrsson
By Becky Eastwood
A page turner and a great literary achievement. I was gripped from page 1 and finished the book in 2 days. I found it to be a unusual combination of poetry and call to humanity amidst a brutal prisoner of war camp during WWII. The setting is Japanese and the protagonists are Korean prisoners of war but the story is so universal. The book reminded me of The Shawshank Redemption and Gorky Park, too. It's the story of an everyman soldier ordered to investigate a horrific murder inside the camp. The spine tingling investigation twists and turns like a Kafka novel or an Escher painting...turning inside out and in, from one clue to another until the final page and a revelation so shocking that you won't forget it. I won't spoil it. J M Lee has the intelligence, political savy and great sense of humanity. His writing reminded me of Steig Larsson in that his book is so thrilling and filled with tension while containing such complex and unforgettable characters.

He is kind of like Abraham Lincoln in the Vampire Killer novels
By Andrew
It is a challenge to convey just how profoundly awful a book is The Investigation by J.M. Lee. The book is pathologically saccharine. It is so over the top in its sanctimonious preaching and the preaching is so relentless and mindless that by the end of the three-hundred some-odd pages I felt as if I had been subjected to some bizarre form of torture by Hallmark.

The book is as offensive as it is embarrasing. The author is writing about a very dark chapter of 20th century history, Japan's attempt at eradicating Korean culture, about which he has taken the time to learn almost nothing. Imagine a movie about World War II starring Robin Williams where Robin plays a prisoner interred at a concentration camp who wins over his German guards by quoting French poetry to them and convinces them to let him fly kites to cheer up the prisoners, stage Verdi and open a secret underground library where books about Nazi propaganda are re-fashioned into novels by Dickens and Tolstoy. That movie would only be a degree or two more disturbing than The Investigation, whose only creativity seems in the creation of a new genre: the Ahistorical Historical Novel.

The book is ostensibly about the Korean poet Yun Dong Ju, who died in a Japanese prison where he had been sent for advocating Korean independence. But the character of Yun in this novel is not based on biography or history. He is kind of like Abraham Lincoln in the Vampire Killer novels, a comic book superhero. Lee's Yun is part Buddha, part Jesus Christ with some Andy Dufrene from the Shawshank Redemption and Robin Williams from the Dead Poets Society mixed in. Anyone who claims to be inspired by this ridiculous cartoon of a real human being has not really been inspired. She or he has been duped, or is trying to dupe you.

Translation ruins the book.
By Emily
I couldn't get into this book at all. While the premise of the book is intriguing, and I bet the book is excellent in its original language, the translation made me put this book down. The language is awkward instead of fluid, uses overly simplistic vocabulary, and I think loses much of the character of the book. It's extremely unfortunate since the translator previously translated an international bestseller.

Not your usual detective fiction
By Mal Warwick
The traumatizing sight of a dead body in his office, an apparent suicide, prompts pediatric psychologist Alex Delaware to retire prematurely at the age of thirty-three. A successful real estate investor, he has the resources to support a more than comfortable lifestyle and is determined to forsake the frenzied professional life he’d previously led. Then LAPD detective Milo Sturgis surfaces in his life again — it was he who investigated the suicide in Alex’s office — and he is drawn into collaborating with Sturgis in investigating a horrific double murder. Reluctantly at first, then with increasing determination, Alex devotes his time, his psychological insight, and his considerable intelligence to rooting out the truth behind the murder . . . and nearly loses his life in the process.

Not just psychology but engaging style, too

Himself an accomplished psychologist, Kellerman clearly knows his stuff when it comes to his field. The signs are all there in When the Bough Breaks. Still, it’s little wonder that he turned to writing fiction even while persisting in his career in psychology. Anyone who can write passages like the following really ought to be a novelist: “His eyes were pale, almost without color. I’d seen eyes like that before. On mullet, packed in ice.” Or, again, in describing blood as “the ruby syrup of life.” I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult to resist the humor in this sort of writing.

About the author

In 1985 Jonathan Kellerman published When the Bough Breaks, which won the Edgar and Anthony Awards for Best First Novel. The book introduced Kellerman’s alter ego, the child psychologist Alex Delaware. It was the first of thirty-one novels to date featuring Delaware. He has also written several important books and articles about psychopathology. In 2015, Kellerman won the highest accolade from his profession, the American Psychological Association Lifetime Award for Contributions to Psychology.

Alex Delaware #1
By J Stanley
This was my first novel by this author. It kept me interested enough to read on and see if they would catch the strange band of pedophiles. I was appalled with the subject matter of this crime so found myself skimming and hurrying through to get the villains caught. Since Alex Delaware is a psychologist and not a policeman, it was odd in some ways how he was brought into the case by his policeman friend, Milo, but Alex seems like a likable protagonist with his sidekick, Milo, so I plan to read on and see how future cases go.

Craziness abounds
By evey
I had a hard time looking for an author other then my favorites; well, Jonathan Kellerman has been added to my favorites. Cannot say enough about the intrigue and questions thrown about in my mind as I read this. It makes one wonder if in fact there are groups of people in this world that do these horrible things. I know there is craziness in this world but this just makes me wonder where Kellerman gets his material or is all just imagination on his part. Yikes!!! A great read, kept me reading by the hour instead of by the minute.

Animal Minds: Beyond Cognition to Consciousness, by Donald R. Griffin

In Animal Minds, Donald R. Griffin takes us on a guided tour of the recent explosion of scientific research on animal mentality. Are animals consciously aware of anything, or are they merely living machines, incapable of conscious thoughts or emotional feelings? How can we tell? Such questions have long fascinated Griffin, who has been a pioneer at the forefront of research in animal cognition for decades, and is recognized as one of the leading behavioral ecologists of the twentieth century.

With this new edition of his classic book, which he has completely revised and updated, Griffin moves beyond considerations of animal cognition to argue that scientists can and should investigate questions of animal consciousness. Using examples from studies of species ranging from chimpanzees and dolphins to birds and honeybees, he demonstrates how communication among animals can serve as a "window" into what animals think and feel, just as human speech and nonverbal communication tell us most of what we know about the thoughts and feelings of other people. Even when they don't communicate about it, animals respond with sometimes surprising versatility to new situations for which neither their genes nor their previous experiences have prepared them, and Griffin discusses what these behaviors can tell us about animal minds. He also reviews the latest research in cognitive neuroscience, which has revealed startling similarities in the neural mechanisms underlying brain functioning in both humans and other animals. Finally, in four chapters greatly expanded for this edition, Griffin considers the latest scientific research on animal consciousness, pro and con, and explores its profound philosophical and ethical implications.

Amazon.com Review
Do animals think? According to Cartesian models of science that have long influenced the Western view of the natural world, they do not: they merely react to external stimuli, the responses to which they cannot control.

A different view has emerged in recent years, one that draws on findings from experimental psychology, biology, linguistics, and cognitive ethology. Writes Donald Griffin, an associate at Harvard's Museum of Comparative Zoology, "Communicative behavior is not a human monopoly." Animal communication--from the dance language of the bees to the vocalisms of parrots and bonobos--suggests that there is more than a ghost in the machine. For underlying that communicative ability are other powers that humans have no easy way of gauging: a sense of time and futurity, a complex memory, an ability to lie, even consciousness itself.

Griffin examines recent studies that show that many species are able to discern and classify colors, shapes, materials, and "sameness," and that many other species are able to adapt their communications systems to account for novel situations. Warning that our understanding of animal minds is still ill-formed and that much work remains to be done in the field before we can confidently answer that ancient question one way or the other, he argues that "animals are best viewed as actors who choose what to do, rather than as objects totally dependent on outside influences." --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
The creator of the controversial field of cognitive ethology, Donald R. Griffin (The Question of Animal Awareness) has spent more than three decades researching animal cognition. In a completely revised and updated edition of his classic, Animal Minds: Beyond Cognition to Consciousness, Griffin, now an associate of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard, discusses his own and others' research findings including those of his critics. Although he admits "it is very difficult to gather convincing evidence about whether conscious experiences may occur in animals," he maintains that scientists like him have "show[n] that many animals behave in ways that strongly indicate that they are aware of their situation and how their behavior can affect it." Intended for others in the field, Griffin's book will enlighten, delight and even ruffle some feathers.

animals smarter than most think

Griffin is no longer with us, but his quality work will be important for years to come--assuming the animals remain as well. There are many changes in the world affecting animals and birds and we need to help them survive and by understanding how fascinating and intelligent they are, we will work for their safety.

The Pioneer of Cognitive Ethology
By Ila France Porcher, Author of The Shark Sessions
Donald Griffen was the first scientist to challenge the reductionist notion that animals are incapable of cognition (the word for thinking in non-human animals), in 1985, and thus he founded the science of cognitive ethology.

This book, and the earlier version released in 1994, provide a range of reports of eye-witness accounts of behaviour by animals that could not have been performed without mental referencing (or thought), along with his brilliant analyses and discussion of the meaning of each.

Though well received by the public, the works of Professor Griffin were widely criticized by the scientific community because his assertions were difficult to prove, and because his views represented a reversal of the currently held belief that animals were unconscious automatons. However, more and more evidence is appearing in the scientific literature in support of his pioneering work, and proving him to be right.

This book is unequalled in presenting a scientific argument that animals, invertebrates as well as the so-called "higher" animals, are capable, each in a unique way, of cognition. The latest version of the work includes arguments in response to criticisms of the original.
