About the Author
Joe Klingler spent a decade developing modern software products for film and video production. His novels examine the interplay of modern technology and the ways good and bad people choose to use it. Mash Up was inspired by a white Napster logo on a black T-shirt. RATS, his debut novel, took form after reading the story of a young boy injured by leftover war ordnance.

Action-packed, good writing, but preachy

A mash up of your favorite action movies. A mash up of your favorite detective novels. A mash up of character types. A mash up of plot lines.

This book was ok with me. Here's what I liked: the plot lines were a bit different. Being a professional musician, I appreciated the music descriptions and portraying the life of a young musician. I liked the main detective character and his partner. I liked the San Francisco local and descriptions. I liked the banter between most of the characters. It was a page turning, action-packed book. I loved the use of all of the modern technology, including the "virus" created to shame music pirates.

I also liked the author's writing style. He is great at describing things and places and action.

What I didn't like: oh my gosh was this preachy!!!!! I get the whole "stealing music off of the internet is bad thing" (I'm a professional musician). And after the first few chapters, the reader gets it, too. But then Chapter 36 is devoted purely to "those who steal music are evil and must be punished." And then 3/4 through the book, we are still being told about the deplorable act of stealing music (and books, movies, videos, pictures…) off of the internet. Quite heavy handed!!!

I felt the action scenes were a bit too much for the streets of San Francisco, not as realistic as the plots, and definitely taken from the big screen all action movies (Bourne Trilogy, etc.). By action, I mean scene after scene of someone hunting down the main character via automobile, gun, stalking, and I won't give the rest away. This may appeal to some readers! I felt it was over the top.

The mid-section of the book seems repetitive in action and storyline. There's a lot of men in their thirties lusting over young 20 somethings who are willing to get the attention to bankroll their lives. The book gets going again in the last third. Exciting, though implausible finish.

I would have liked more back story on both Qigiq and Kandy. I'm fine with the ending, though it seemed rather open-ended (sequel maybe?). But I never got a good sense of why Qigiq was in San Fran, other than he needed to learn more about modern technology. And Kandy's character could have used more depth. Why is she such a cool bad ass? How did she get to where she is? More time on their backstory would have been preferable to the preachy music piracy diatribe.

The edition I read had some quotation errors, a few typos, and a big problem with using the word Afro American.

I would probably read a sequel to this, especially if I could learn more about Qigiq and Kandy.

A musical mystery page turner!

I know I love a book when I intentionally slow my reading down, so the book doesn't 't have to end. Mash Up has something in it for everyone; the tech lover, the music lover, the suspense lover and the romance lover.
First and foremost it is a mystery. A whodunit that kept me guessing until the very end. It is filled with suspenseful moments and twists and turns with a wonderful array of creative, intelligent characters. On another level, it is filled with musical nuances and descriptions that musicians will appreciate and non musicians can enjoy as well.
On a deeper level still, the author delves into the problems created by access to the digital world of music and art and the evolving issues of technological pirating. Questions every person must answer themselves; just because everyone is doing it, does it make it right?

The story hooked me from the first page, and kept me interested and involved until I sadly turned the last page.

Less Would Have Been More

Somewhere in the 600 pages of Mash Up, there's a good story, but around page 300 I gave up trying to find it and skipped to the end.

Mash Up pretty much sums up this book. It is a mash up of techno-thriller, gory slasher, Girls Gone Wild with a liberal sprinkling of classical music references.

Let's see if I can sum up the plot. Body parts of a missing San Francisco cellist are mailed to her friends along with a warning not to illegally download music. It's up to Alaska native detective Quigiq and his partner Kandy to find out what happened to poor Sally. At the same time, a rich arrogant computer mogul is developing clandestine software to combat illegal music downloads. Of course, it's all related.

The sections of the book dealing with the evil software were for me the most interesting. The character of the lead programmer was the most well developed and I enjoyed reading the parts he was in. The whole concept of a company creating a virus that creeps into your laptop, deletes all the songs you forgot you downloaded from Limewire and then automatically posts your name, photo and a shaming confession ("My name is Suzy Jones and I steal music.") on dozens of websites all over the web is pretty damn scary. And fascinating.

But there is just too much going on here--too much description of extraneous details, too many characters to keep track of, too many pages devoted to conveying action where a couple of sentences would do. (i.e. "The phone rang. Kandy answered it.") Suspense thrillers should be tight and focused and keep the reader's interest.

While there were parts of this book that shone, there weren't enough of them, and too many of what Elmore Leonard calls "the parts readers skip over."

Mainly for gold bugs

Although this book delivers some interesting insights, it is in essence just the usual gold bug manual mainly written for gold fans who want to confirm their conviction that gold is going to rise. True believers will certainly know most of the points.

The empirical price model is the interesting part. The author suggests to buy gold when the gold price is lower then the fair value the model derives.

The author uses only a few macroeconomic variables; too many variables can fit any curve. There is logic in his formula, but that does not guarantee a reasonable prediction of the future. To arrive at his long term forecast he makes strong assumptions far into the future. For instance the S&P is assumed to stagnate till 2021. That is quite possible, but who knows, maybe it doubles in that 7 years. Sovereign debt is assumed to grow 11% per year. At least the Clinton years have shown that there is no law of nature of ever growing sovereign debt. His long term forecast to 2021 is therefore not really a forecast but instead a scenario.

The part about analyzing bubbles is in my humble opinion outright nonsense. He states that a bubble has 2 boom phases (boom 1, correction, boom 2 or blowoff) and that there are well established ratios between the duration and the height of boom 1 and the blowoff boom. Boom 1 for gold was 2001 to 2011, boom 2 is yet to come. I sincerely doubt that forecasting bubbles is that easy.

A compelling argument for Investing in Gold

The only cook book I enjoy

This cook-book is a great read for those looking to explore cooking techniques of classic french cuisine that was popular in the early 90's. In the book you will find the recipes used in Marco's five part mini series which aired in the spring of 1990 called ' Marco Cooks For... " featuring chefs like Nico Ladenis and Albert Roux. This book is really part memoir and an homage to the chefs he respects and had worked for in the past (up until that point -1990)

This is the only cook book that I truly enjoy reading for the recipes as well as the anecdotes. It can almost be read as a novel. You will be briefed on Marco's early years as a child in Italy, as well as his journey cooking his way through some of the best restaurants in Britain. By page 20 you'll realize he has a mad passion for food and that in itself is compelling enough to keep you entertained. Not to mention the food is amazing.

i already knew this book was going to be full of Recipes i was not going to be able to conquer, but i purchased it anyways, this book will give you a great lesson on excellent french cuisine. Marco Pierre White one of the greats, i recommend this book to all chefs and aspiring cooks that want to try something new

Amazing book

This is an absolutely amazing book. This book captures some of the true genius of Marco Pierre White and features some great photographs from when he was at Harvey's. Although the book offers much uniqueness and a great insight into Marcus cuisine I do wish to offer some caution to the novice cook or even home cook. Marco has made much of this book relatively easy-to-follow but, to a novice cook this cook may pose many challenges. Much of Marco's belief of using fine and fresh ingredients are reflected in the book. My best example of this would be lobster ravioli, where Marco gives instruction on how to kill a lobster quickly and humanely. Which I couldn't agree more giving a humane death to any living creature is of the utmost importance but, some home cooks may not be willing to go seek out live lobster. I will without a doubt much recommendation to this book though, because of its unique creativity and use of ingredients.
