About the Author

Anver Friedman is a Distinguished University Professor. He received his PH.D. degree in 1956 from the Hebrew University. His research interests include partial differential equations, both general mathematical theory as well as applications to models that arise in the physical and life sciences, in engineering, and in industry.

Chiu-Yen Kao is an Associate Professor at Claremont McKenna College. Her area of expertise is in applied mathematics.

Book Review of TotIs by J Joseph Kazden – Kirkus Reviews

Kazden offers a mind-expanding debut novel about a symposium examining the core concepts of the universe.
Imagine if great minds from across the ages could congregate in one room to discuss their understanding of time and reality. In this ambitious work, Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, among others, come together to do just this. To befit the nature of the symposium as a great Hellenic institution, the author gives each of the characters Greek names. Einstein is called “Miapetra,” meaning “one stone”; Hawking is referred to as “Geraki” or “hawk,” whereas Isaac Newton is “Neatono” or “new ton.” The men meet at Neatono’s house, where they begin a discussion about relativity theory, and specifically how the past, present, and future are relative. The author’s use of Socratic questioning proves to be a gentle introduction to complex ideas, particularly for the uninitiated. Yet, readers may still benefit from prior knowledge of quantum mechanics to truly grasp this discussion. The explorations of how perceptions of reality vary between individuals are particularly fascinating: “So two individuals of the same species with sensory equipment of unequal quality will experience differently the same reality, to all intents and purposes, would you agree?” The book introduces two new definitions: antIs, “the human observer’s experience of reality and the universe,” and totIs, “which defines a total reality of the universe unavailable to human observer’s created antIs reality.” The arguments are dazzlingly convincing, although there’s a certain arrogance in reanimating the world’s greatest thinkers simply to have them concur with one’s main thesis. However, the book is not without a wry humor—Max Planck talks of switching to a gluten-free diet and Newton speaks of getting his cataracts removed. Purists may contest the probability of each word the author drops into the mouths of these great men, but this controversy is part and parcel of this brilliantly daring piece of work.

About the Author

J. Joseph Kazden was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he studied mathematics, chemistry, and psychology in college during the early 1970s. Deeply influenced by the ideas of such thinkers as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell, he began a lifelong pursuit of the nature of perception and reality. This led to the study of Taoist, Buddhist, and Hindu thought, along with shamanic and First Peoples rituals and practices, in addition to continued study in physics and cosmology, focusing on the counterintuitive nature of the reality described by relativity, quantum mechanics, and particle physics.

In the early eighties, he began a career in art, focusing on images generated by the psyche, which Jung called archetypes of the collective unconscious. Believing that the world we experience is not ultimate reality, he came to an epiphany in 2012. This book is the culmination of this journey and the expression of that epiphany.

Totis challenges our view of “reality” in an entertaining and easy to follow story. Kazden crafts a hypothetical conversation between some of the greatest thinkers known to mankind blending their theories and discoveries to justify the possibility that we are all living a persistent illusion. This is a powerful book that has the potential to change the way the reader views the world.

An Easy Introduction a Philosophy

Although I do not think of myself as a philosophy student I found this book VERY easy to follow as J Joseph builds his case, step by step. The author has cleverly given the 'argument' roles to known philosophers to keep it interesting. The writing itself is succinct and carefully written to encourage thinking along these lines. I recommend it.

Best memoir I've ever read. Tension of spy novel, but narrative observation of 19-year-old girl in perils of post-WW2 Hungary.

Late-in-life Anna Koczak has done a terrific job recreating the world she saw in 1947-49 Hungary, the situations she encountered, and the way she (the very young woman) reacted to them (mercurial ups and downs, petulant outbursts, sullen silences, delightful mental flights from grim reality, great hopes and great fears). The postscript -- a reunion 50 years later with her old nemesis from the communist secret police -- is a wonderful confirmation that love indeed had triumphed over incredible evil. Clearly Anna's guardian angel had been working overtime during that dark period of the brutal repression of the Hungarian people. Most Americans today know little of that history, but many who grew up in the Catholic school system here in the 1950's and -60's recall the imprisonment and torture of Hungary's Cardinal Archbishop Mindszenty. They prayed for him daily for many years.

Anna's story is historically informative, sobering, tender, harrowing, and at last, satisfying. We can all be thankful we have not faced even a few of decisions she was forced to make, without hesitation or time to plot the potential risks. There were sections I read only during daylight!

No gore, but great none the less

I'm of two minds of this book. This first is that it was excellently written. I loved how accurate she tried to keep the locations, spellings, exc. The story was a great historical novel written from the Countess' own voice which was creepy, yet made a part of me believe what she was selling (about not murdering anyone). The second mind was... I thought there would be more blood? I really was expecting a type of historical horror novel where we witness all the women the Countess has killed and how it was done. Call it morbid fascination but I was looking forward to that.

The Countess of Bathory was accused of killing 612 of her own maidservants. Wow talk about a serious serial killer. It never evens occurs to her that it is considered murder when she beats her maid servants to death. She merely brushes it off as `I had not meant to'. It shows just how insane she had become. The details though are spared as the reader is left wondering sometimes just how twisted these punishments were. Erzsebet was considered the first female serial killer and a `vampire' much like Vlad the Impaled she was said to have bathed in her victims blood. While we aren't 100% certain what happened, Rebecca Johns decides to paint her opposite. Erzsebet is described as a woman trying to make it in a man's world (also Medieval let's not forget times were different then) who just did what was expected of her for her station. Johns shows Erzsebet as a character who was married young to an indifferent husband, widowed and left to survive. I actually at times was empathetic towards her where if I had seen the gore it would have gone the other way.

All in all it was an interesting read. At times it is slow going, but I've found that's how it is with most historical fictions so it shouldn't bother genre fans. While I personally wanted the blood (I'm weird) I was pleased at how Johns made me want to like her, and that was no easy feat.

Down For The Count

This is a beautifully written book. Rebecca Johns has oodles of talent and the countess of the title is a fully-rounded and fascinating character. You are immediately transported into the late 16th and early 17th centuries.....the language, the sights and sounds and smells, the people....everything rings true. The author doesn't strike a false note and the world she evokes is wonderfully real. Ms. Johns also succeeds in humanizing a woman who has been demonized. Not only can you understand her actions, from her point of view, but at times you can sympathize with her for having to make her way as a woman in a world mostly run by men. But Ms. Johns also lets us see Countess Bathory's faults.....her sadistic streak, her temper and her self-delusion. This character is so real that she truly does emerge, living and breathing, from the pages of the book.

My only complaint is the rather bizarre choice to put in a prologue that tells you right away what is going to happen, so that there is no suspense. If the author were a lesser writer, this decision might make you lose interest or at least reduce your enjoyment of the novel. Be that as it may, even though I knew what was going to happen to the countess I was still caught in the web that Ms. Johns has woven. A remarkable book.

Beautifully written.

This book was excellently written. Rebecca Johns did a wonderful job with Countess Erzsebet Bathory. I found myself feeling sorry for her and her plight of being accused of crueltly to her help, even though she was indeed very cruel.

It is amazing how marriages were arranged and girls VERY young were sent off to be a part of someone else's family, even if you weren't really a match. The Countess did what she had to go she thought to keep her household running.

The descriptions in the book of the countryside, people and events are exquisite. I felt like I was riding with her in that carriage to her new home and so many other times. Lots of romance, betrayal, family betrayals and loyalties will be tried in this book. You will be cheering for one side or the other by the end.. What side will it be?

This book is wonderful because it makes you want to read other books about The Countess and many others, at least I do now!

Rebecca Johns I knew was a writer to watch for when I read Icebergs, but she really did well with this one! Bravo Ms Johns!!

She also spends a significant amount of her time teaching graduate business, organizational� behavior/leadership, and human resource courses at Rollins College and for the School of Advanced Studies at the University of Phoenix as well as mentoring doctoral learners through the dissertation process. Previously the vice president of leadership development/human resources at the Central Florida YMCA, she was responsible for contributing to the strategic plans of the organization by leading the association’s talent management initiatives―recruiting, developing, and retaining the association’s talent. In her current and previous roles, she has worked with various leading organizations in the high-tech, financial, pharmaceutical, and transportation industries. With a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Maryland, she has an extensive list of publications.

Robert L. Lovler, PhD, has over 30 years of experience working both as an internal and external consultant to Fortune 500 companies in the areas of employee assessment and selection, organizational development, strategic human resource consulting, and training design and delivery. His career began at CBS Inc., where he served in several roles, including director of training for the retail consumer electronics unit, then moving up to vice president of two different units within the CBS Publishing Group. He is currently senior vice president of global human resources at Wilson Learning Corporation, an international consulting firm that focuses on human performance improvement. During his career, he has had the opportunity to design and implement a wide range of organizational interventions both domestically and internationally, working in Japan, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, England, and Italy. In the United States, he supervised the development and implementation of the assessment center used to select candidates for entry into the Environmental Protection Agency’s Senior Executive Service Development Program, presenting the results in Washington, D.C., to Christine Todd Whitman, the EPA administrator. He also developed the system used to help select commercial airline pilots for a major U.S. airline and worked with former Senator Warren Rudman to develop and implement a nationwide survey of sales practices in the rent-to-own industry. He has served as a testing consultant to the California Bar Association and the state of Pennsylvania, and he oversaw the development of the licensure examinations for medical physicists in the state of Texas. He has been on the adjunct faculty of the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Hofstra University, and the University of Central Florida. Dr. Lovler received his BA degree in psychology from UCLA and �holds master’s and doctoral degrees from Hofstra University.� He �is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Dated with poor explanations of important concepts

I am using this book for an undergraduate course in psychological testing and measurements. I would not recommend for a number of reasons. (1) Even though it was updated in 2016, the information provided appears to be dated, relying on classical testing theories rather than contemporary theories. If providing information from the classic-testing perspective, which could be important for historical context, you think it would still be counterbalanced with our more contemporary understanding of the concepts, but it isn't. Which just makes it inaccurate (2) It poorly explains several of the subjects, including how it addresses the different types of validity. This is the cornerstone of testing and measurement. If you get anything right, it really should be the topic of validity. (3) This is the kicker for me, the instructor resources are really terrible. This may actually be more the fault of the publisher, but the instructor resources are about as useful as looking at the content outline at the beginning of the book.

Will not be using again. Will also be better at screening books before I teach this again in the Fall.

Helpful text, written very concisely. It's one of very few that I'm keeping instead of trading back in for cash. It's rare that a textbook is written so well. Has great summaries and study aids, and is the most current information right now.

Save your money!

Bought the book based on reviews. While I love the subject matter and agree with much of the content (which is very basic and very limited in scope) it's basically an ad for a website. The "book" only takes about 7 minutes to read, but paying to read a sales pitch made me feel ripped off. There is much better stuff out there for less.

Good book. Excellent introduction. Basic if you already know a lot about the subject.

It boils down to these three keys:

Step 1: Ask
Step 2: Believe you have already received it.
Step 3: It will be yours

Because the focus is on the subconscious mind, the goal, then is to program or condition the subconscious mind. The basic idea is to use affirmations. In this case, they suggest their product: Mind Movies.

The concept behind Mind Movies is elegant and simple: Create a digital dream board and affirmation list, and then run it on your computer all day. It is a foreground or background fade, run so lightly you can barely see it, so you can still do your regular work. Since we’re at our computers so much, it is a way to basically let your subconscious stream on your dream board without interruption while your conscious mind is otherwise occupied doing your work and everything else we do on our computers.

I've never used Mind Movies myself, but from what I know of it, the product sounds excellent. For those interested in such things, it would be something I might recommend.

Thank you for this very interesting book! I can recommend it to anyone, even when (like in my case) english is not yr mothertongue. After finishing it, I started right away to practice your guidelines. It already has helped me a lot and I'm sure it will keep on doing so as I've incorporated it in my daily routine.
