It's what I expected, but probably not you.

I made the mistake of reading this book while waiting in line for the doors to open during a Black Friday sale. It was on the third day of my overnight camping spree in the front of our only towns Best Buy store. I was just waking up from a power nap and I decided to find something to read on my kindle tablet. Looking back on it, it was a funny coincidence because I remember feeling like a bum--camping on the ground for the third day in a row--and I searched the word "bum" on my kindle. This book popped up and I liked the illustrations on the cover so I bought it and began to read. By about the 22nd page I was rethinking my entire life and wondering why I stopped living so freely as I used to in my earlier years of life. In my twenties I was a reckless idealist who chased after the fairy tale love and smoked copious amounts of mind altering substances. Tens of pounds on the weekends and nearly a pound a day during the week....my father was a business man so there was never an empty jar in the house or lack of Bic lighters near the nightstand. Anyway I've settled into the cushy resolve as a software engineer and have lost sight of many dreams I used to have as a lost young man. This book stirred something in me as I continued to read it. I found myself not blessing anyone who sneezed anymore, I rediscovered the joy of crapping into my sweatpants and letting the soil run slowly to the finish line of my shoe tops and I went home. Black Friday sales suck and this book is super tits. Buy it and live again!

Beautiful story with some unexpected scenes

Beautiful story with some unexpected and surprising scenes. There are some similarities to On the Road when he describes his travels across the country. But, the way he weaves in and out of west coast to east coast, city to mountains, his descriptions of scenery, dogs, trees, characters... you name it. Its hard to describe but, this book takes you on such a journey. It is incredible.

My only criticism is that occasionally Kerouac makes up words or used them oddly. The reader sometimes has to pause and figure out what he is trying to say. Otherwise, a great piece of nostalgia for Californians and those interested in the 50's and early 60's.

About the Author
Don Richardson, author of Secrets of the Koran, Lords of the Earth and Eternity in Their Hearts, has been studying the Muslim world for more than 30 years. He and his wife, Carol, spent 15 years among the Sawi, a Stone Age tribe of Irian Jaya. Don designed an alphabet suited to the Sawi language, authored 19 primers, taught the tribesmen to read in their native tongue and translated the entire New Testament. More than half of the Sawi accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Since 1977, Don has served as ambassador-at-large for World Team, a mission organization. Don holds an honorary doctorate of literature from Biola University in La Mirada, California, is an ordained pastor and speaks at more than 40 church conferences each year.

From 2 cultural views - no one's unrelatible

I read this and told pieces to my husband - who much prefers fantasy novels - and even he was so intrigued by this story, he wanted to read it himself! If you think anyone is unreachable or can't relate to God and his followers - read this.

The first part of this book shows you how the tribesmen viewed their lives and how disturbances to what's normal to them looked from their non-western, non-civilized views. This part I found to be extremely eye-opening. The stark contrast in how they think because of a different background made me sometimes laugh and sit in awe of how obviously easy we miss things because we don't consider how they might see it!

The second part is how Don Richardson embarked on this high risk adventure and all the challenges. It's a great story! Twice I just blurted out loud 'No way!!!!' while reading, I was so amazed by it (and I've read a lot of good Christian biographies in silence).

If this intrigues you a bit, stretch yourself and read it!

The Second Most Extraordinary Biographical Piece I've Ever Read - The First is the Bible;)

What an extraordinary storyteller! I love Don Richardson's style of sharing this beautiful testimony. It was raw, authentic, truthful and just VIBRANT with life as it is in the uncivilized parts of the world. My imagination had to do very little work as the book and it's characters came to life. AMAZING.

About the actual meat of the book; Never have I ever heard a testimony so profound, so vital for every human being to read. My most compelling thought of this book is that in every culture around this world - no matter how far removed from Church or a bible people are - there is still an element of the Gospel of Jesus. That's no coincidence.

My encouragement to all Christians is that if you haven't read this fascinating and extraordinary tale before - read it. You will not be sorry. Just bear in mind it is not for the faint hearted. I mean we're talking cannibalistic tribes here. But it's all worth it.

My encouragement if you're not Christian and have no particular interest in Christianity - read it. You will learn something new about a culture so far removed from your own that you will be fascinated from start to finish. I assure you.

The gospel power displayed in unforgettable story

Why you should read this book: The Christian publishing world doesn't sell near the percentage of mission books as other kinds of books. Though disappointing, it's not that surprising, as the mission field often seems far from our own experience. However, God's heart is to build His church continually, and in all places.

Richardson goes to those who have no gospel witness at all. He chronicles not only his trials but his amazing success --which came about in the oddest of ways. Great violence threatened to overtake the people he was working with. I won't say more, for to do so would be to spoil a great climax.

I didn't give this 5 stars because I felt the book moved rather slowly until the end. It is readable, but it would not be honest to call it a page-turner.

One caution after this. Richardson hints (and later writes a book stating explicitly) that every unreached culture has a "redemptive analogy" already built into it. The missionary task then, involves finding this redemptive analogy and using it to unlock the people's hearts. Although that seems to be the case in Peace Child, it is a stretch to say that God a)has provided a redemptive analogy in every culture and b)one must find it in order to maximize the power of the gospel message. The gospel is powerful by itself. One not need be anthropologist, nor an insightful sociologist, nor a brilliant detective, nor even a spiritually discerning half-wit to bring the Gospel in power. "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God." Mission work is good work and real work. If unique ways of illustrating the gospel are available, we must, by all means use them. But to expect that we must find a specific redemptive analogy within every culture in order to unlock their hearts for the gospel (or that God has planted one knowing that in the future a missionary would come and find it) --this is conjecture.

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation." You need not be a brilliant missiologist adept and discerning redemptive illustrations from culture to successfully plant a church among the unreached.

High level

Tim Brown has had an amazing career working at the premier design firm in the country, IDEO. This book in part recounts stories of various clients they have worked for, and in part lays out a vision for how design can be more human centric. He discusses using these approaches for everything ranging from industrial design to social engineering.

Although the stories about the various clients are interesting, I found the book to be so high level that it was hard to take away practical steps. I would have found the book more valuable if instead of keeping the discussion at the very highest level (brainstorming is good, need to control the chaos, design goes through phases, etc) it would take some of the principles discussed and look at specifics -- here is a specific client interaction where we did x, y, z. Here is why we did it. Here is what happened. Here is a specific failure case. Here is what we learned.

Without it, although the book covers a lot of interesting case studies, it doesn't do so in a way in which I felt that I have knowledge of things to do differently in my day to day creative activities within my company, or ways in which I could interact with clients better.

Too many vignettes; not a user-friendly book

The problem with good design is that as a finished product, it tends to efface the process that led to it. Master painters and sculptors often made dozens of studies before creating the celebrated works we see in museums --- and we need to follow a similar process before we can expect to produce anything good or beautiful.

I dislike this book. The title promises so much, and then the author tries to stuff in as many vignettes as possible, giving short shrift to each, as well as to the overall message. Since every story employing [the author's firm] IDEO or a "design team" was a smashing success, the argument goes, the author's processes must be the right way to stimulate design thinking. What about the flip side of the story? Why isn't there an analysis of design failures?

Fortunately, the author summarizes the main process points in the final 15 pages of the book in CEO-talk: "begin at the beginning", "take a human-centered approach", "fail early, fail often", "get professional help", "share the inspiration", "blend big and small projects", "budget to the pace of innovation", "find talent any way you can", "design for the cycle", "don't ask what? ask why?", "open your eyes", "make it visual", "build on the ideas of others", "demand options", "balance your portfolio", "design a life".

While reading this book, I found that "design team" could often be replaced by "consultant". The author does not describe what separates mediocre design from great design; nor how to identify a good design team.

The author describes his "butterfly test", where people vote for ideas by affixing post-it notes next to items posted on the wall. This is essentially a public ballot --- a cute idea, which will only work in organizations where people won't be swayed by how others have voted; otherwise, wisdom-of-crowds benefits won't accrue.

He demonstrates and invites the reader to share the methods of thinking and acting which have resulted in true innovation not only in product form and function, but in new experiences in hospitals, amusement parks and in life-saving design and engineering efforts for the Third World. Other books illustrate the design process and share the beautiful results achieved by Product Design and Development professionals, but aside from this book and Henry Dreyfuss' "Designing for People" which is so influential it was reprinted after half a century no other text shows the reader how to think and act as designer; a skill so necessary in solving the complex problems of modern life.

I highly recommend this short text, not only to the artist, or engineer but to all concerned citizens who hope to make a contribution in solving the problems of their own life and those of a global society.

In Rosenberg's entertaining if at times overheated fourth entry in her suspense series featuring Ventura County, Calif., judge Lily Forrester, a direct sequel to 2009's The Cheater, flashbacks allow readers unfamiliar with the previous book to easily follow the action. Several years earlier, Lily and her daughter, Shana, were raped and their attacker eluded capture. This and subsequent traumas have left Shana in a precarious emotional state. When Shana has a meltdown after her boyfriend dumps her, Lily picks Whitehall, a private psychiatric hospital outside San Francisco, out of a phone book. Without referrals or further investigation, Lily takes her daughter to Whitehall, where Shana voluntarily commits herself. Unfortunately, Whitehall is ruled by a rich, handsome inmate, who's a sociopathic killer, and a greedy doctor who'll do anything to land an insured patient. Meanwhile, Lily's friend FBI special agent Mary Stevens and her partner, Brooks East, investigate suicide clubs in a somewhat more plausible subplot.

Throughout, flashbacks rehash the Forrester family’s earlier traumas, while the main narrative centers on the abuses Shana undergoes at Whitehall and her and a fellow patient’s mutual attraction. Total waste of time

"Awful" is the only word to describe this book. It is too long, and filled with information and details that are just not pertinent to the story. Do we really need to read how Shana gave a make over to several women in the psychiatric ward? Are the details of the case Lily Forrester was overseeing necessary? If the fluff had been eliminated the book would have been much shorter but I still don't know if the story would have been better. It's just weak.

I honestly do not understand what anyone could see in this novel. I am an avid reader and I enjoy - on some level - almost every book I read. This one was TERRIBLE! First, the story itself is completely unbelievable: the main character (Shana) suffers rape, the murder of her father, the kidnapping of her mother, involuntary commitment, blah blah blah...really? NO ONE is that unlucky. Any one of those tragedies would be sufficient to convey the character's mental instability - there is no need to get this dramatic. And then her mom's friend just happens to be an FBI agent searching for Shana's boyfriend? Again, completely unbelievable. Both Shana and her mom undergo character transformations basically apropos of nothing. We're supposed to believe that after years of resentment toward her mom, Shana suddenly decides that her mom is fantastic and the career she chose for Shana everything she ever wanted? So unbelievable that anyone would make such a dramatic turnaround in a matter of days, especially after being committed by one's own mother in a corrupt and life-threatening mental hospital. And her mother, after being kidnapped by Shana's boyfriend, stripped naked, threatened with death, and believing her daughter was murdered by her boyfriend, suddenly feels so much pity and compassion for the man who did all this to her? WHY?!?!
Second, beyond the predictability and just plain boring writing is how utterly UNLIKEABLE every single character is - there is not one character whom I found to be realistic, three dimensional, or even likable. I found all the characters annoying and wished the serial killer would kill them all. AWFUL!

A Troubling Mystery

My Lost Daughter by Nancy Taylor Rosenberg

A willful spoiled and deeply scarred daughter must come to grips with both her own self identity and her feelings for her mother. The confines of law school and a mental institution, together with the cast of someone flew over a cuckoo nest provide the setting for Shana Forrester's explosive experiences.

The dual story line was a bit weak. The primary focus was on Lily and Shana Forester. There was not enough written about FBI agent Mary Steven's and her part of the story to consider this a dual plot. My take would be to beef up Mary Steven's role and give a little more credence to the FBI involvement. That said, the tension between Lily and Shana was hard to take. The friction was flat out painful but well demonstrated. Lily's involvement with Richard Fowler seems like an unnecessary aside. I have mixed feelings about the book, the story line was convoluted enough to be interesting but there seemed to be too many areas that just didn't seem to fit the overall scheme. I did like the book, in spite of the fact there were a quite a few scenes that were difficult to take. Lily did illustrate an astounding level of mothering behavior and she seems to regain control of her own life. I liked the wrap up in the epilogue as well.

I recommend the book.

This wonderful album is a brilliant pictorial history of the 1st Polish Armored Division composed of about 250 photographs, documents and publications largely collected by WO1 Alexander Leon 'Manka' Jarzembowski, a veteran of 2nd Armored Regiment, as he soldiered for Poland between 1917-1949. The collection lay in albums unseen for decades until recent interest in the Division and its Commanding Officer, General Stanislaw Maczek, caused Jarzembowski's son, Jan, to revisit his father's archive in order to provide a narrative for the almost forgotten Division and for his father's memory.

The photographs themselves cover the period from 1939 and the invasion of Poland before moving onto the French Campaign of 1940; the bulk of the images illustrate the story of the Division from arriving in the UK in 1940, reforming in 1942 and then its campaigns in North-West Europe 1944-45 - its pursuit of the Germans across northern France, Belgium and Holland, and finally into Germany. Included are some of the final Divisional parades prior to disbandment in 1947. There are also many interesting photographs of dignitaries who visited and inspected the Division thorough out those years, including General Sikorski.

The range of images available in this album is wide and impressive with many excellent shots of uniforms, equipment and armor, which not only provide an aid to historians and veteran's families, but, expertly annotated by the author, are of great value to military modelers as reference material.

This album is a tribute to the gallant men of the Polish 1st Armored Division. General Maczek and his men fought the Second World War from the very beginning to the very end with extreme bravery, but gained nothing for their efforts, yet maintained their dignity and pride to the end of their, often very long, lives.

About the Author
Janusz Jarzembowski was born in London to exiled Polish parents, whose father was a highly decorated Polish veteran. He has always had a keen interest in military history and associated hobbies including military modelling, touring battlefields & collecting militaria, as well as being the guardian of the family archive. Jan's career has been based in retail management in a variety of sectors with both national and niche operators, he currently works within recruitment. He is married to Carolyn, a family man with 4 children, residing in Great Burstead, Essex.
