Liana Lowenstein, MSW, is an author, sought-after speaker, and practitioner with over 22 years of specialized work with children, adolescents and families. I use this book almost every day; the activites and ideas for kid's groups are wonderful and most are good for all age groups. The best part about this book is that the author has included the objectives and goals for ea group activity-a bonus for those of us doing tx plans and progress notes. Love this book!

Great Strategies

This book gives a solid explanation of how we store our memories and why they sometimes fail to stick. I have always thought that I had a poor memory... now I know that it was not poor memory but poor encoding (getting it into my brain). While I got through college reasonably well using rote techniques I always felt that I lacked a deeper understanding of the information I was being taught.... NOW I know why....I wasn't making connections at all...
If you know you are intelligent but think you have a poor memory READ this book...You may just lack the proper encoding skills
She gives great advice of how to get things to skick in your brain....
I KNOW... I didn't even have to look at the book to remember the author's name.... gotta be a first

BEST memory book to date! 10 stars!

I have all the Harry Loryane books... Shame on me for turning to cheap memory tricks(mnemonics)to ace my studies(I was actually hoping this book was on mnemonics, imagine my disappointment when I found out that it wasn't, and later on my sheer exuberance after mastering true memory!). I had some pretty serious learning problems prior to reading this book...

Before, I could not even recall what happened in a paragraph that I had just read but now I can recall an entire book after just one reading! and most important of all understand its main contentions and all the little nuances. Memory is so fleeting, especially my own that any device to capture it is priceless!

Basically the key to long term transferal or understanding itself is connection: this is why mnemonics is so much more effective than rote rehearsal and the techniques in Memory Key so much more effective than mnemonics. You only understand something to the extent that you can relate it to knowledge that you already have. While mnemonics forms a superficial connection, the Memory key will teach you how to connect on deeper principles (categorizing, expertise, sensitive patterns, super clustering, priming, elaborations etc etc...)

The bottom line is this is the best book on memory improvement, the very first thing it teaches you that memory itself is plural...If you want to remember dates, where your lost glasses are, how to pitch a ball properly or like myself, what you read and study then buy this book, it's peppered with practical and applicable techniques and principles. I suggest reading the note-taking chapter first so that you can properly take notes on the book itself. Some books are meant to be tasted, others to be swallowed and MEMORY KEY to be chewed and digested.

While most books on memorization usually describe memory techniques and strategies, Fiona McPherson's book takes the reader a step further. I have read over a dozen books in the area of memory, and I have discovered through experience the strengths and weaknesses of different memory techniques. In this book however, it teaches the reader how to USE memory strategies rather than just simply the techniques.
The book's approach can be aptly summarized in the phrase, "Smart selection is better than total recall." That is, effort put into understanding what you memorize, as well as why, is better and more effective for long-term recall. This is also true from my own experiences with memorization techniques. The book does not advocate placing everything into working memory. Instead, there is a balance between the cost of a memory technique (in time and effort) and using memory aids, such as creating lists. Memory recall is based not simply on techniques, but also in knowing how memory works as well as why specific strategies are effective. Like other memory books, this book also emphasizes frequent review of information. However unlike other books it provides practical tips on effective reviewing. Also the chapter on "Study Strategies" is an excellent chapter worth the price of the book. It breaks down the details for note-taking to a level that makes sense. It also describes creative ways to summarize information; these are in turn tremendous aids to understanding and ultimately, memorization of the material.
Some of the weaknesses in the book include terms that are not clearly defined for the reader at first (cues, codes) as well as a number of typographical errors (p. 42 - " traget" is target and "sues" is cues). Overall though, it is nice to pick up a book, read it and have my own experiences concerning memory validated in the book's advice. Fiona McPherson's book fills a nice niche for how to be aware of memory strategies and in the practical aspect of applying memory techniques.

Treated as property by various "owners," Widge, the 14-year-old protagonist, is forced to attempt the theft of Hamlet from the man himself. Yet, after ingratiating himself into the acting company, he finds true friends for the first time in his life. What will he do--betray his only friends, or risk his life by defying his guardian's orders? The story by Gary Blackwood (Dutton, 1998) brings Shakespearean England alive for young listeners through the descriptive language and situations of the many characters. The tenuous survival of children during this period, even in such a vital city as London, is an underlying backdrop. This, combined with the central issues of friendship and deception, provides a story filled with tension and surprises. Actor Ron Keith's narration adds a strong auditory element to the story. The veteran narrator uses his well-developed talent to change voices for the characters, and employs inflecting vocal tones and silence to craft fuller personalities. Each voice is tailored to fit the subtleties of the character, as in the wicked Falconer. This latest from Blackwood (Beyond the Door, 1991) is a delightful and heartwarming romp through Elizabethan England. Narrator Widge, 14, resigned to leading the unremarkable life of an orphan, is bought by the self-serving Dr. Bright to learn his new ``charactery'' (shorthand), and become his secretary. Although Widge applies himself, Dr. Bright is nevertheless willing to sell the boy, for a mere ten pounds, to Simon Bass, a theatrical manager. He sends Widge to London, so that he can copy down the new play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and enable Bass to perform it without paying royalties. Once within the confines of the Globe Theater, however, Widge discovers a brave new world of friendship, fun, and backstage intrigue. Welcomed into the company as an aspiring apprentice, Widge is soon learning lines, practicing sword-fighting, and avoiding Bass's henchman. The Bard himself makes a cameo appearance, as do other famous members of the company. To his credit, Blackwood limns just how Widge, who has no theatrical aspirations, proves a talented and hard-working member of the troupe. Highly Recomend!

The Shakespeare Stealer was by far one of the best historical fiction books I have ever read. I started off by having to read this book for school but I enjoyed it so much that I went on to read Shakespeare's Scribe and Shakespeare's Spy. The reason I give this book only four stars is because the first two or three chapters drag on and are hard to get through. Once you get through Widge's life as an orphan and his apprenticeship at Dr. Bright's the book is action packed and forces you to read, and read, and read on. Unlike some books I have read in the past The Shakespeare Stealer has a very satisfying ending. This was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventurous books! :-)

I really think that this is a wonderful book. Widge is an orphan boy who originated in the country, and has come to London with the task of stealing a play from Shakespeare himself! Instead, he ends up a part of the Globe Theater “family" and learns some new vocabulary. Along the way, he learns that “all the world's a stage" and that some people aren't who they seem......

My niece loved this book. She asked me to preorder it for her but I had already done that as an early bday present. she loved it so much she finished it in under two days. she loves reading about her favorite ever after high characters.

I started reading this book one night after school and enjoyed it so much i decided to read it for a class book report. My favorite part was when Shuffle,Lizzie Heart's pet, ate a throne cake and had a bad stomach ache and Pirouette had to give her grass. My favorite character was Galla the snow fox. I liked when the cook thought she was a mouse! Ha ha ha ha! I think other kids would love to read Ever After Once A Upon A Pet Collection.:]
