Mathematics cannot be avoided, but they are presented in a way that appeals to insight and intuition, in lieu of formal derivations which would show but the mathematical skill of the writer.

Used it for 15 years as an aircraft structural engineer

It was 15 years a go that I got this book as a part of a lecture by Dr. Broek. Over the years I have come across many books on this subject. I have to admit that this book is one of the best introductory material written on DTA. There are other books with probably additional data, however, what separates this book fom the rest, is Broek's ability to write in a coherent and easy to follow format.
Unfortunately, since the book is not in print the price is a bit too steep for a new copy.
Also try "Structural Life Assessment Methods" by "Liu" - sold through ASM.

About the Author

Jacob Kenedy was born in London in 1980 and still lives there today. When he graduated from St John's College, Cambridge he was already a chef at Moro, and continued to flit between the kitchens there and those at Boulevard in San Francisco for ten years. In 2008 he opened the critically acclaimed Bocca di Lupo, twice awarded London's best restaurant. You can find him at the stove there most days of the week. In 2010 he opened Gelupo, a gelateria and delicatessen in the same street, which made a lot of people very happy, and in the same year co-authored The Geometry of Pasta.

Not simple but diverse

`Bocca" is a cookbook for those who are determined to cook everything from scratch, those wanting authentic recipes and especially passionate cookbook collectors. It has more than 200 recipes in it, which are nowhere the easiest to prepare. Much of that lies in the ingredients such as; a lengthways half farmed rabbit, the feet and head of a pig, cured pork fat, large octopus, lambs brain, pigeon or tripe.

Recipes included are; raw, cured/ sausages, fried, pasta, risotto and soup, stews, grilled and pan fried, roasts, sides, desserts, cookies, frozen desserts and drinks, including different coffees. An interesting introduction explains the love of this Italian food and its diversity. Pictures are included for some of the dishes; many other photos are included of Italy, Italian markets and the ingredients themselves. There is also a story about each dish and possible substitutions.
There are information pages inserted about such things as mozzarella and sea urchins, roasts and stews, cured sausages and sausage making.

One reason to like this book is the lesson it gives in making authentic Italian dishes, even if you do not want to make your own salame. If you could find a good butcher you would be able to obtain many of the ingredients. With some substituting you can gain a glimpse of these dishes. Some we found quite enticing: chickpea corn fritters, tagliolini au gratin with shrimp and treviso, pappardelle with chicken liver ragu, and duck cooked like a pig.

These are not the easiest dishes to prepare in some cases, but if you are an experienced cook who wants to expand your repertoire, other than the ingredients they would not be a huge challenge either; nor will many of the dishes be to everyone's taste; but for those who wish to get out there and explore and expand their cooking skills this would be an interesting project.

This book is a joy to read and the recipes that i have tried are delicious.

To the people that have problem with cookbooks that are too hard.... All i can do is offer the advice that i used to ascend my culinary career. Start simple, obviously, but not so simple that you are insulted or bored. Sandra Lee and Sunny Anderson are two cooks/authors that start slow but produce nice results.Alton Brown is another GREAT resource for info/recipes/learning how to cook. Once you get brave pick up a new magazine or two, to further broaden your horizons. I am saddedned when i see a great book brought low because it is above the skill level of the reaader. Don't keep it. Take the offending book back and get one to your liking. Then you can tell us what you think of the new easier to use book.

The title of my post says it all really; with the hundreds of commercial and non commercial cook books out per year. To be declared one of the best by Food and Wine Magazine is prestigious.

Outstanding Cookbook a MUST for Italian Cooking

Bocca is a cookbook that should be in everyones home. The author, Jacob Kenedy has recipes that are easy to follow and uses few ingredients for the most part. Each recipe produces delicious authentic dishes. His style of writing is a pleasure to read too. Chef Kenedy is the proprietor and chef at his award winning restaurant in London's Soho district. In addition to the recipes and beautiful photos of Italian ingredients, he includes other things Italian including a card game he played with his Grandmother after a long Sunday banquet. His recipe for gelato is sensational too!

An important update to understanding Irish manuscripts

The Book of Kells has long been considered one of the greatest art pieces of human history, and rightfully so. It was not properly studied until the mostly black and white Urs Graf reproduction of the early 1950s, and then seriously updated with the 1974 Thames and Hudson color work of 1974. In that volume Francoise Henry detailed the results of two decades of study that confirmed my research for a doctoral dissertation on the palaeography and calligraphy of the book and its antecedants. Now, in an even finer study of the book (that is best used with the excellent Trinity College CD reproducing all pages), we see the depth of material in the codex and its relationship to both Irish culture and the wider celtic cultural diaspora. Bernard Meehan, who has published an earlier, less scholarly volume on the Book of Kells, has given us an essential resource that permits a wide audience to explore and comprehend the glory of this work. No one interested in Irish art or fine manuscripts should be without this first class study.

Magnificent

I have a book on Kells from about 1978 that was fabulous for its day, but this one by Meehan tops it by far. The reproductions are breath-taking and the text is scholarly to fault. The craftsmanship of fine printing, high quality paper, and excellent binding and book cover make this a museum piece. If you've fondness for this period of art, this book should be in your collection.

About the Author
David Watkin is Emeritus Professor of the History of Architecture at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Peterhouse. He has written many books, among them: Morality and Architecture Revisited and Sir John Soane (1996), and is a leading authority on Classicism and its successive renewals in architecture.

Expanded Version of an Old Favorite

This is the fourth edition of this monumental book. This edition has been expanded to include additional coverage of Egyptian and Mesopotamian architecture at the early end, and the coverage of the architecture of the twentieth century has been greatly expanded. There is also expanded coverage of the architecture from Asia, particular that of Japan.

The book now has 50 color and 931 black and white photographs. Most of these are from Europe, but the rest of the world does have some coverage.

The increased size and scope of the book now presents a continuous coverage of the evolution of architecture from the earliest building, about 5000 B.C. to buildings constructed in the twenty first century. It is the most complete single volume history of architecture available and it's new edition is greatly improved.

The author, David Watkin is Professor of the History of Architecture at the University of Cambridge.

Great price for a great piece of knowledge.

This book is tough to read, especially if you don't know anything about architecture. But with a tough path ahead of me, I appreciate the thoroughness of the text. Well-presented photos along with these text makes for an interesting read. I have only read up to chapter 3, and I am already excited to learn more about the history of architecture.

The vendor I got mine from was also very quick in the mailing process.

improper details

First time I read D. Watkin's book almost 10 years ago. Basically, it is a comprehensive and detailed throughout. However, I was struck by one 'little' improper detail - instead of the picture of Haja Sophia (St. Sophia Cathedral) in Kiev built in 11 cent. I found a picture of a Neo-Byzantine style church which dates to the beginning of the 20 cent. I'm just curious is it that difficult for a recognized art historian to tell the difference? Or it's just a matter of 'neglegence'? In 1996 I wrote a letter to the Publishing house and recieved a nice answer saying that in the case of the third print they would definitely check and replace the picture with the proper one. No changes so far.
