great creative journal for my Annie Sloan inspired projects

love this journal/ just what i expected - broken down into the sub-style of shabby chic she explains in her books like french elegance or swedish, she lists defining characteristics of each style & shows her paint colors associated with that style. There are pockets at each section which I am using for paint chips & fabric swatches as I figure out what I want where. I can paint onto the page colors I mix and make notes on them - and I plan to record notes on my projects for future reference

5 STARS! Romantic, sexy and swoony!

I’m not even going to pretend that I’m anything but a huge Lauren Blakely fan girl. She just seems understand what I want in a romantic comedy, and she nails it for me every single time. Just when I think she couldn’t possibly top her last book, she comes out with another that totally sweeps me off my feet. Asking me to pick a favorite is like asking me to select the best chocolate chip from the bag. It’s impossible, they’re all wonderful little bits of awesomeness. But sometimes, one will rise to the top of the bag in all it’s perfectly formed glory, and for me this year, it’s The Knocked Up Plan.

Everything I love about romantic comedies was here, all wrapped up into a fabulously well written package. The plot wasn’t a typical workplace romance, and Blakely’s take on this genre was a breath of fresh air. I’m always impressed by the research she does for her books. This author is wildly creative, and she always finds something interesting and fun that makes each of her couples unique—their “thing.” I loved what she did in this book–it was romantic, exciting and, quite honestly, pretty darn inspiring.

These two characters are professional communicators, so it was no surprise that they had the banter down pat—it was sharp, witty and never missed a beat. The humor in this book is abundant, but pay very close attention. What really kept me grinning throughout this story was the completely pragmatic way this couple approached their arrangement. Totally oblivious to their mutual attraction, neither one of them ever really considered the ramifications of throwing some romance onto that blazing inferno of lust. It was pretty tongue-in-cheek, and I have to say Blakely executed it spectacularly. I think all of her readers will agree, though, that while she doesn’t hesitate to put obstacles in her characters’ paths to their happily-ever-afters, she also doesn’t allow those obstacles to turn into these big, drawn-out, pain-filled, angst-ridden scenarios. There is just enough contention, just the right amount of conflict, before she delivers an incredibly satisfying resolution. I don’t know how other readers feel about that, but I find it pretty dang refreshing.

I just couldn’t put this book down! It was so romantic, so swoony, so incredibly sexy! The Knocked Up Plan kept me furiously tapping my Kindle, late into the night, while simultaneously lamenting the turn of those pages and the fact that each one drew the story closer to completion. Three-hundred-plus pages of pure reading pleasure, this story kept me smiling from start to finish. Five smooches from me for Lauren Blakely’s The Knocked Up Plan!

I absolutely LOVED this book!!

Lauren Blakely books just flat out make me happy. Everything she writes brings me pure joy. The smile on my face currently is a direct result of The Knocked Up Plan. I absolutely LOVED this book! (Pretty much a guarantee with this author.) Thank you Lauren Blakely for a smart, fun, strong and independent heroine in Nicole. Thank you the sexy, swoon worthy hero in Ryder. Thanks for this charming, witty, deliciously sexy story filled with laughter, swoons, and even a tear or two. Thanks for this book. It’s perfect.

The premise of The Knocked Up Plan is unique and fun. Nicole wants to have a baby. Alone. She just needs to find the perfect donor. She’s looking for someone who is college educated, handsome, and obviously not a serial killer. Enter Ryder, her sexy coworker. He’s perfect. Meets all her criteria and more importantly he’s not looking for a relationship. They strike up a deal where Nicole helps Ryder with a work project in return for his “cupcakes.” The baby making fun ensues and feelings develop.

I am pretty much obsessed with Ryder and Nicole’s relationship. Their friendship evolved over the months of arrangement into something strong and passionate. They connect so well because they are both genuinely good people with shared interest and off the charts chemistry. I mean, they are seriously perfect for each other. Oh and their kisses and embraces are smoking hot. I just adored them. From the very first page, I just knew I was going to love Nicole. Her wit, determination and caring nature won me over immediately. I love a strong woman who goes after what she wants. That is one of Lauren Blakely’s strong suits. She never creates a weak woman. Ryder has made it onto my favorite Blakely Boy list. Swoon. That man and his ovaries exploding charm is everything you need in a hero. Betrayed in a previous relationship, it is not hard to understand why he sought out to remain single and unattached. Even though he is a confirmed commitment-phobe, he wasn’t a manwhore. Loved that. He’s such a great guy and I really really fell for him.

If you are a fan of great romantic comedies with sweetness, great characters, heat, and a unique and refreshing plot line, I highly recommend The Knocked Up Plan. Time and time again, this author knocks it out of the park. She never disappoints.

The Knocked Up Plan

The Knocked Up Plan by Lauren Blakely.

I don't know where to even begin with this review. This was absolutely everything I've come to expect from a Blakely book and then some. We have Nicole, a mating and dating columnist and Ryder, a relationship consultant: they are coworkers at Hanky Panky Love - a more apt radio station name I've yet to come across. They are fabulous friends and while Nicole thinks Ryder is sex on legs and Ryder thinks Nicole has the sexiest legs, they've never crossed the ping pong line.

Until.....

Nicole is very happily single and has never been in love. However, she does want children of her own and is looking at IVF options, and by options I mean sperm donors. Unfortunately, none of the donors she's considering meet all of her criteria. She has a lightbulb moment and wonders if Ryder would be willing to provide his specimen for purposes of reproduction. It's all very black and white, clinical, and straightforward until Ryder is presented with the proposal. While Ryder enjoys most aspects of his job, his show has been more about sex and not so much about intimacy. He has been given the option to shape up or ship out of Hanky Panky Love. In order to turn the tone of the show around, he's to take a woman on ten dates and woo her, reporting back to the masses on intimacy and feelings. The two make a new agreement to enjoy the dates together and work on Nicole's desire for a baby at the same time.

I have to say that I enjoyed their dates almost as much as they did. I also love that (and anyone who follows Blakely on social media will know this) the authors love for animals comes across on the pages. The pets are like well loved family members with a personality of their own and frankly, I think it's the sweetest thing ever.

Blakely had me in tears of laughter and tears of heartache from the very first page. I have never felt so invested in a relationship and with two characters - both individually and as a couple - before. Maybe I could relate to certain aspects and that made it all the more satisfying. About the Author
In the 1990s, Hou Hee Chan Laoshi and his brother Luke Chan were among the first teachers to officially introduce Zhineng Qigong, a medical Qigong famous in China for healing thousands with "incurable" diseases, to students in the United States. They named their organization Chilel (meaning Qi Therapy) Qigong with the approval of Dr. Pang Ming, founder and grandmaster of Zhineng Qigong. Drawing from over 40 years of training and practice in Taiji and Qigong and his background as an engineer, the hallmark of Chan Laoshi’s teaching is his ability to explain to his students HOW and WHY a movement is performed in terms that they are able to understand. Chan Laoshi's philosophy is that Qigong is not something that is mysterious. He defines Qigong as "physical therapy or exercise with mindfulness.” Qigong is what we practice once we become aware of our body and aware of how we move our body. To complement the physical forms of Qigong, he teamed up with Eva Lew, M.D. who provides insights into the mental and emotional parts of Qigong practice as well as the relationship of Qigong to Western Medicine. Their collaboration resulted in the release of "Medicine Begins with Me: a Holistic Approach to Healthcare.” This program is designed to train healthcare providers as well as the general public in effective, easy to learn Qigong techniques.

A Significant Work on Qigong

Disclaimer: I regularly attend the author's workshops and retreats. This a significant work on the writings of Dr. Pang Ming, interpreted skillfully by an accomplished and experienced communicator and teacher. This work gives one of the best and clearest presentations available of Dr. Pang's writings. The book gives the technical and cultural nuances that would normally take the Western student years of study before understanding. The book is a scholarly work covering the depth and breadth of qigong in general and more specifically the open system of Zhineng Qigong. It serves as an invaluable reference work for students and teachers by providing insight gained by many years in the teaching of the methods. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wishing to deepen their practice.

Master Chan's decision to interpret Dr. Pangs writings rather than translate them word for word makes for a much clearer understanding. I thought this book was excellent. I recommend it to anyone interested in Zhineng Qigong (or Che Lel Qigong).

I have to say that this is the first book that I have read with this many mates for one woman. In my opinion, the author handled the love scenes without resorting to using a bunch of different references to a male's member and it worked just fine. In fact I preferred it. And best of all she didn't use any derogatory terms for a woman's genitals. Thank you. I really hate when they do that. This book rates five stars for that alone. But in addition I liked the plot and I definitely liked all the mates. Even though this is a decent length book, I would have enjoyed reading more about this family. I do hope that we get to enjoy Megan's story soon and then of course the twins. I definitely recommend this book. Enjoy!

Nicole Delmore is on the run from a sadistic alpha male who wants to mate her when she meets Caleb and Jeremy Royce and is forced to change them in order to protect them which begins a series of events that changes all of their lives in this exciting paranormal romance. Kris Royce’s world has lots of interesting differences and the plot seemed to take on a life of its own the more caught up in it I became in Nicole’s story and there was a well balanced mix of sex, emotion and danger and though some elements could have come across as a bit fantastical, the author presented it such a way that it all made perfect sense and just made the story that much more entertaining and I can’t wait to read more books by this author.

Loved "Save Me" and loved this one as well. This was a great read. When i saw how many mates she was to have i thought hmmm i wonder how this is going to work, but the author did not disappoint. I really hope that she will continie to write more books and am really hoping for Megan's book and who her mates will be. I really hope all the other characters like Raine's brothers will get a book as well as well as other characters mentioned. I really hope she will continue to write more books as the first 2 were AWESOME!!

About the Author
AA Michigan native who studied writing in school, Donna first came to Vegas to make costumes and soon was weaving the stories she heard in the back of the girls' dressing room into her first novel. Now she is the author of The Alexandra Merritt Mysteries, which include 'The Last Two Aces in Las Vegas', 'The Las Vegas Desert Flower', 'The Las Vegas Special', 'Rough Ride in Vegas', 'M.I.A. Las Vegas' and the recently released "The Las Vegas Sophisticate'.�
Donna has written several other stand-alone thrillers, 'Desperate Ambition', about a political assassination, 'The Right Society', about a devout Christian family that moves into a religious community and finds it's easier to get in than it is to get out, and The Other Hand, about a famous athlete who leaves his family for a young, virginal girl. Shortly after they divorce, she winds up slaughtered. He is the primary suspect, but not the only one. Donna has a popular series of historical romances, The Manhattan Stories, 'Jessica', 'Pillsbury Crossing', 'The Cabin', 'Kimimela', and 'D'Arcy Curran'. A sixth and seventh in this series will be released soon.
Her light-hearted work, 'Conversations With Skip', is the story of a shelter dog adopted by a young woman having trouble sleeping after her divorce. With his unusual ability to communicate, he is soon running her life, arranging her romances, and teaching her to laugh again.
Her most popular novel, 'Maude', the story of her Grandmother, is a #1 best-seller on Amazon and has spent multiple weeks on the Wall Street Journal's Top-10 list. 'Maude' is now available as an audiobook, was recently released in Italian and is currently being translated into Russian, German and Slovak for upcoming international editions.
She has also written three screenplays, a stage play, poetry, short stories, and a children's story.
Donna stills takes occasional classes at UNLV and at writer's conferences and is an active member of the Anthem Author's in Henderson, NV.

Great book. I couldn't put it down

I read the reviews and laughed a bit because a few of the reviews I read seemed to be from people who knew this family personally. Since it was only 99 cents, I thought it was book written by someone who threw it together and pawned it off on her neighbors, but it was really a great book. It is told in the first person, in the voice of Maude. It's an honest book and written in plain words, like you would use to talk to your friend over a cup of coffee. It covers 1906 through the late 1960s. I found the time span interesting to see Maude go from using horses for transportation and using an outhouse to finally having her husband work for an automobile plant in Detroit and having indoor plumbing and electricity. The books spans the lives of her children and grandchildren and is very relatable. I read it in just two days. For 99 cents, this is a great bargain.

A Life Lived

And like life is...not perfect. Donna Mabry takes us on a journey through her Grandmother's life, bare and raw and heartwarming. She takes stories her Grandmother told her and fleshes out each character so the reader can feel the love, the pain, the longing and losses. I cried through the book which I could barely put down. If you like a book that stirs your feelings about a person who survives the hardships of life with strength and courage, you will love Donna 's Grandmother, Maude.

wonderful story!

I was enthralled with this book. I am so glad you shared this, Ms. Mabrey. Not only is it a retelling of an interesting lifetime but it also gives firsthand insights into the Great Depression, women's suffrage, WW2, and how it affected American society. I commend Ms. Mabrey for her storytelling skills and will be reading more of her works. ETA: I noticed that this story is getting criticism for being 'depressing'...life was harder in a lot of ways for women back in those days and Maude didn't have as many options as we do now. When I was a child my grandparents shared stories with me about what life was like for them during the period that this book was written, i.e. making 50 cents a day as a farm laborer, living in a tent with three small children at nineteen years old, and it was a much tougher existence. Regarding her son who was obviously mentally ill, little support was offered back then as well. I think Maude did her best with the cards she was dealt. She obviously was a loving grandmother to her granddaughter, the author.

Murakami's latest is a nonfiction work mostly concerned with his thoughts on the long-distance running he has engaged in for much of his adult life. Through a mix of adapted diary entries, old essays, reminiscences and life advice, Murakami crafts a charming little volume notable for its good-natured and intimate tone. While the subject matter is radically different from the fabulous and surreal fiction that Murakami (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) most often produces, longtime readers will recognize the source of the isolated, journeying protagonists of the author's novels in the formative running experiences recounted. Murakami's insistence on focusing almost exclusively on running can grow somewhat tedious over the course of the book, but discrete, absorbing episodes, such as a will-breaking 62-mile ultramarathon and a solo re-creation of the historic first marathon in Greece serve as dynamic and well-rendered highlights. Murakami offers precious little insight into much of his life as a writer, but what he does provide should be of value to those trying to understand the author's long and fruitful career. I loved most of it

I’ve never read a Murakami novel before so I had no idea what to expect from his running memoir. I’d seen it on the bookshelf of a number of runners so as I started training for my first marathon a few weeks ago, I picked up the book as well.

I loved most of it. I found his philosophy with both running and writing to be similar to mine. There are many things that someone who’s not an endurance athlete can’t understand so maybe this book speaks to a narrow audience. But I’m glad to be a member of that audience. I found myself nodding along. I’d read a free sample on my Kindle, then found a used paperback to buy so I could underline passages and make notes in the margin. I loved this book so much I penciled it up.

Now that I’ve seen this glimpse into his mind I want to try his novels, too.

I would not say this is “equal parts training log, travelogue, and reminiscence,” as the book description does. It includes all those things, but not in equal parts. It’s a series of essays that he wrote, mostly during his training for the 2005 New York City Marathon, but the memories take him to other races and other periods of his life, and on a whirlwind tour of his stomping grounds across Hawaii, Boston, Greece, and Japan.

As a runner, I loved it, and recommend it to fellow runners! Maybe nonrunners too.

I almost could have written this book... if I were as talented a writer as Mr Murakami, of course. As a runner, I related to this book very much, often finding myself nodding or chuckling to myself because I totally understand what the author is talking about as he talks (writes) about running and his experience in participating in the sport over many years. I admit I was unsure that I would like this book based on some of the reviews, but so many fellow runners had recommended it that I finally picked it up, and I am so glad I did. It was a relatively quick read, too. At a few points I even found myself tearing up because I've had some similar experiences as the author. I won't spoil the book by listing them here, but if you are a relatively competitive age-group runner/triathlete, you will likely find much in common with Mr Murakami's experiences and thoughts as described in this book. I wouldn't say that it gave me any more or less motivation to run, but it did help remind me of why I love running, and why so many other people do, too.

Food For The Creative Professional Soul

I have this theory that goes like this: sometimes we find books, and sometimes books find us.

Oftentimes I'll pick up a book, read a few lines, and quickly close the covers. I'll instinctively know that no matter how much I want to read it that that book's message was meant for a later time. And sure enough, years later, I'll spot the book on the corner of my shelf and be moved to pick it up, only to find exactly what I needed to hear. It's funny how life, and reading, works that way.

Other times I'll find a book in the most random way - through a footnote or a random citation in an obscure periodical, for instance - and that book's message will be exactly what I needed to hear at that moment in my life. That was certainly the case with Japanese novelist Karuki Murakami's wonderful little book, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running.

While training for the New York City Marathon Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami decided to write about it as well. What materialized was a unique memoir that discusses his twin passions of writing and running, and the interesting way they nurture and inform each other.

I've been struggling as of late staying focused on the hard work of writing, so when I opened the book and read the following lines I knew that a message that I needed to hear had found me:

"One runner told of a mantra his older brother, also a runner, had taught him which he's pondered ever since he began running. Here it is: Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. Say you're running and you start to think, Man this hurts, I can't take it anymore. The hurt part is an unavoidable reality, but whether or not you can stand any more is up to the runner himself. This pretty much sums up the most important aspect of marathon running."

Kraus's book is an excellent introduction to the history of Western music in China. Open to academic readers in the fields of East Asian studies and music, not to mention the intelligent layman, what makes the book particularly effective is its combination of generic, issue-type chapters and specific case studies of individual musicians. Highly recommended!
