Review from a Mac user

Let me start by saying, the 4 star rating is primarily due to the fact that I am Mac user and not a PC user and therefor could not "test" the procedures outlined in the book. I do, however, work with many PC users within my online business and therefore have a need to be familiar with their use and be able to help my PC user clients.

Being familiar with WAMP (and MAMP for Mac), I found this book to be well written. It was laid out in a step by step format, complete with images showing the process from beginning to end with easy to follow instructions.

This book and guide is ideal for someone who already has a solid basic understanding of how the internet and computers work together. The introduction clearly explains the purpose of the book, as well as why one might want to use this tool.

A complete novice may struggle a bit as there are (and must be) some industry jargon used. The author does a nice job of adding many images to help offset some of that need.

I would love to see the Mac version of this process by this author in a companion book.

Beautiful Introduction

I find the approach in this book to fuzzy logic interesting, useful, simple, and beautiful. Starting with something like interval numbers is almost certainly the best way to start a fuzzy logic text. It presents a simple example that is very easily understood and allows one to see what differentiates fuzzy logic from other multi-valued logics in an almost intuitive manner.

I have not worked through all of this book. But, while working through the truth table exercises in Chapter 8 I thought 'couldn't I do these on a spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Works?' With Bojadziev's formulations how to produce truth tables on a spread sheet (I used Microsoft Works) came almost immediately. (The only real exception was that I had to treat fractional truth values, as functions. Expressly, in Works you type =1/2 in the cell.) To paraphrase Betrand Russell (correct this if I have the author wrong), 'a good notation has a certain suggestion to it.'

Since I did this, I noticed some textual errors. p. 164, (g) reads [~p->(q^~q)]->~p proof by contradiction. This is not a tautology. The tautological form, I think, Bojadziev is looking for is either [p->(q^~q)]->~p, or more likely [~p->(q^~q)]->p. Also, on p. 165 p^(p->q) should not read (1 0 1 0, which is q^(p->q) in context), but

0. Additionally, on p. 267 8.5 (a) for p->~q should read

(0 1/2 1 1/2 1 1 1 1 1).

Still, Bojadziev's notation is the most helpful I have seen for fuzzy logic texts. The notation helped me to think of simpler ways to deal with truth tables. This also allowed me to check many different forms of tautologies and see if they are tautologies in other than 2-value logics. For instance, modus tollens is only a quasi-tautology in greater than 2-valued logics (I have investigated up to 11-valued logics, and no doubt, this could be proven for all n-valued crisp logics). Modus ponens is a tautology for n-valued logics, where n is greater than 2 (at least up to an 11-valued logic, and no doubt this can be proven). This suggests, on a logical basis, that falsifiability is not as strong a criterion as verification. Without this book, such insights would have not happened or would have been much harder.

About the Author
William Graebner is Professor of History and Chair of the department at the State University of New York at Fredonia. He received the Frederick Jackson Turner Award from the Organization of American Historians for Coal-Mining Safety in the Progressive Period: The Political Economy of Reform (1976). He is also the author of The Engineering of Consent: Democracy and Authority in Twentieth-Century America (1987); Coming of Age in Buffalo: Youth and Authority in the Postwar Era (1990); The Age of Doubt: American Thought and Culture in the 1940's (1991); and an edited collection, True Stories from the American Past (1993). In 1993, he was Fulbright Professor of American Studies at the University of Rome. He currently serves on the editorial board of The Historian and as Associate Editor of American Studies.

A Wonderul Way to Relive Roman Adventures

This was one of my very first Kindle books and did not disappoint. My expectation was that the Rome my wife and I had explored on different visits would come alive as I read. And that is exactly what happened. Armed with my old travel guides, and occasionally consulting Wiki entries on the old city, I was able to once again tramp through familiar sections of the city or spend time for the first time in locations that had eluded us on our trips. The Bennett/Graebner itineraries bring a special feel and voice to each site, a sense of being with old friends and enjoying sights in a new way. We would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go beyond the usual guidebooks and seek out unique neighborhoods, buildings, and natural settings that exist throughout Rome. Bennett and Graebner give the reader a much more complex and deeper meaning to the term "eternal city" as they take us on a journey through a city that few know as well as they do. Our goal now is to have the chance to follow their suggested tours in person and not just as an excellent read.

Rome the Second Time Is for First Timers Too

Rome The Second Time is designed for the return visitor who has seen the major tourist sights. Yet, it is also a perfect guide book for first timers like me who want to experience the city in a different and deeper way than is often possible in a brief stay. On my first trip to Rome I followed all or part of 6 itineraries included in the book (Rome and Its Aqueducts; Hitler and the Germans Come to Rome; On the Gionicolo; The Nazis and Fascists in Central Rome; The Architecture of Modernism and Fascism; An Evening in Pigneto). Thanks to Bennett and Graebner's excellent guide, I enjoyed every step and syllable.

The itineraries are detailed and easy to follow and took me to places I would never have found on my own. The sights selected introduce the
wayfarer to Rome's history, architecture, infrastructure, neighborhoods, politics and political movements, archaeology, ethnic and immigrant communities
high and popular art, night life, music scene, social classes, sports stadiums, schools and universities and much more. The commentaries describing the sights are lively and entertaining and explain succinctly the history and significance of what one is looking at. They tell us what to look for; what to see that we might miss otherwise.

Although I was not able to walk all 15 itineraries, the book guided me to an intense connection and bond with the city And reading it cover to cover on my return home helped me cope with feelings of Rome withdrawal and to anticipate and plan my second time. I highly recommend Rome the Second Time to first, second or tenth time visitors to Rome.

Lots of interesting facts about Rome

This book is peppered with interesting and fun facts about Rome and its recent and historical past. Some may find it a little heavy on the fascist regime info but if you plan on spending time venturing around some of the featured neighborhoods like the Jewish ghetto it can be a helpful reference guide. Most of the itineraries are good. May not be the best choice for the first time traveler to Rome but a good resource if you are going back and looking for little more variety to plan some personal walking tours.

A comprehensive stalwart of ballet technique

Gretchen Warren's 'Classical Ballet Technique' is a very thorough explanation of classical ballet theory, suitable for intermediate and advanced students. If you are a beginner student, you might like more explanations of the basic technique and less of the advanced material. There are two things I don't like about this book. First, the photos are mostly small and are all black and white with the models often wearing dark or grey leotards. This means it's hard to see some of the details. Second, it's quite old-fashioned (first published in the 1980s). So, some of the language and views, for example the section on the 'ideal ballet body', are out-dated and restrictive. This means, I wouldn't give this to a young girl. It's really designed for the aspiring professional.

This book is just what every dancer needs. A wonderful reference. It includes hundreds of photos. Specific notes and descriptions of correct execution of positions, steps, moves. I especially love that there are photos of the incorrect way, too. Goes into detailed explanations of why different exercises are important. Detailed coverage of everything ballet :)

Please don't become your own financial advisor

Who should buy this book: You have lots of debt, struggle to manage your finances, don't know much of anything about shares, saving for retirement or any of that other financial jargon that confuses you.

Who shouldn't buy this book: Anyone who regularly reads financial websites like fin24, moneyweb, businessday etc. You have a fair understanding of shares, RA's, ETF's, budgeting, retirement funding and are already a reasonable good saver, budgeter and have your financial issues largely under control.

Unfortunately, I fall into the later category and learned almost nothing new by reading this book. While I can see that someone with no money sense could benefit from this light read, I feel that any reasonable competent person can read pretty much everything contained in this book for free on the internet. There is nothing much that hasn't already been written about in the last year or so.

The other reason for my average rating is that, while the author attempts to put concepts and examples into simple language, sometimes the examples given are too simple and for that reason, actually dangerous in their promise. Issues like tax a frequently absent and some examples given are downright irresponsible. e.g The author advocates borrowing money to buy shares! This is not for novices! An example around purchasing a property vs renting comes to a definite conclusion (which I won't spoil here), but there are no facts and figures mentioned explaining why this conclusion was reached. I fear that the novice would pick out these sound bites and conclusions as 'hot tips' for their next family gathering without understanding the nuances involved in these complex decisions.

I also found some inconsistencies in the various chapters. In one case, the author will give suggested values on an investment topic, yet in a later chapter will use different values for the same example. Perhaps some more editing is required. The last third of the book is nothing more than a financial dictionary and I was disappointed to see that this serves little purpose but to act a a quick reference to words used in earlier chapters. I mostly skimmed through this section as a quick google search will explain what a 'share' or an 'endowment' is.

I would consider this book more of a 'motivational' book, than a serious, financial game plan for newbies. For me, the most ironic thing by far is the fact that the author spends the last part of the book explaining why you shouldn't be your own financial advisor and need professional help.

Perhaps the publishing house decided on the book title to make it sell well, I don't know. But I can absolutely state that this book is in no way a manual on how to become your own financial advisor.

In summary, I applaud what the author is trying to achieve - educate the beginner on some of the best ways to get ahead with their money matters and understand some of the things they can do to become wealthy. But I feel that it was a little too light on the nuts and bolts on actually going about constructing a financial plan.

Bottom line - if you learned a lot from this book, please do not become your own financial advisor. Seek professional help! I read it in about 4 hours over 2 days and didn't really see much value for my money. It would be a good gift for someone who really is clueless about money though. All in all, it's a decent read for the layman or young person starting out, but does not deliver on the promise of you becoming your own financial advisor.

Great appication to a South African Context

Really enjoyed the section on residential property and the fundamentals of finance and investing and how that is practically applied in different life stages.

Warren is also not afraid to use real life figures and examples that makes the book a great balance of theory and practical applications.

Worth a read for anyone looking to get better equipped with their finances.

Well organized, and good information on chords and which scales/modes are used for each palos and shows standard chord progressions for the palos.
Does not have all voicing for all chords (I imagine that would be impossible) but there are many.

Barely out of his teens, Litvin served for three years in the Red Army on the killing fields of the Eastern Front. His memoir presents an unadorned, candid narrative of the common soldier's lot in Stalin's army. Unlike the memoirs of Russian officers—usually preoccupied with large military operations and political concerns—this narrative offers a true ground-level view of World War II's deadliest theater. It puts a begrimed human face on the enormous toll of casualties and provides a rare perspective on battles that were instrumental in the defeat of the German army.

Litvin's varied roles, ranging from antitank gunner at Kursk to heavy machine gunner in a penal battalion to staff driver for the 352nd Rifle Division, offer unique perspectives on the Red Army in World War II as it fought from the Ukraine deep into the German heartland. Litvin documents such significant battles as Operation Kutuzov, Operation Bagration, and the German counterattack on the Narev, while also providing unique personal observations on fording the Dnepr River under enemy fire, the rape of German women by Russian troops, and literally seeing his life pass before his eyes as he watched a Stuka's bomb fall directly on his position. And, because part of his duties involved chauffeuring Red Army generals, he also presents revealing glimpses into their personalities and behaviors.

Originally written in 1962, with events still fresh in his mind, Litvin's memoir lay unpublished and unseen until translator Stuart Britton and a Russian colleague approached him about publishing it in English. Britton interviewed Litvin to flesh out the details of his original recollection and annotated the resulting work to provide historical context for the campaigns and battles in which he participated. Remarkably free of Soviet-era propaganda, this gem of a memoir provides a view of the war never seen by western readers, including photographs from Litvin's personal collection.

An invaluable historical document, as well as a remarkable testament of survival, Litvin's memoir offers unique and penetrating insights into the Soviet wartime experience unavailable in any other source.

driving for 800 days on the eastern front....

This book did not live up to the hype i was expecting. I felt I read more about him driving around during the 800 days on the eastern front then fighting. Since the RED ARMY refused to let anyone record journals or any other form of communication it's hard to really grasp what a Russian Soldier experienced. If you want to get a better perspective on the eastern front read from a GERMAN SOLDIERS view...i STRONGLY recommend FORGOTTEN SOLDIER or BLOOD RED SNOW.

It is What it is

Although the negative reviewers might of had valid points, I am not sure the critism is really relevant. I knew two WWII veterans very well, one of whom wrote a brief memoir. Using them as a reference, I do not believe the author was trying to create an exciting, flowing, historically, geographically precise docudrama (if it was I would be very suspect of the motivations and validity of the document and would not have found it near as valuable). I am not sure the author was even trying to educate us although I certainly was. I believe the author was trying to set down in print a brief personal history of WWII obviously, largely from his point of view. What was added by the tranlator was an aid which allowed us to go back in time and perspective without disturbing the author's account. What the author (and the other veterans I know) think is important based on his experiences obviously doesn't always match readers expectations. With this in mind and in response to specific criticism, I found the author's references to various vehicles he encountered interesting and important. Maybe not exciting but, again, that wasn't the point. I thought the historical and geographical descriptions to be adequate in and of themselves. The author's accounts and stories flowed well enough with help from the translator's added descriptions and foot notes.

I bought the book based on a recent description in the WSJ. I had read a book some time ago called "The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier." I thought it would be interesting to compare what sounded like a similar story told by two men of similar rank who fought wars in the same basic geographic area a century apart. The similarities were remarkable and reading both books contributed much to my persective of war and this region. Beyond the obvious basics of survival, what was important to these two men is very much the same. And I think what was important to these two men from their personal perspective in these two "histories" is what the authors and their "helpers" were trying to convey. Both documents succeeded in this respect and did so well enough to, dare I say it, be entertaining. I would give "The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier" 5 stars however. I thought it was a better read. If you must be constantly thrilled and excited by a book to enjoy or be informed by it, subtract one star from each rating. And if you are looking for graphic descriptions of blood, sex and gore, don't bother with either of these reads. A rating of two stars however misses both the point and the mark in my opinion. And thus ends my critique of the critics.

A Russian Soldiers Tale

Considering the amount of memoirs available form WW2 it is amazing how few are from a Soviet perspective, at least in English. So in this context the book is a gem and in content it shines.

Nikolai Litvin's memoir is very low key and honest. For the most part he is a driver, either as a commanders chauffeur or with a transport battalion and you get interesting small details as how dirty his one uniform becomes when he served as a mechanic. Don't worry there are hair raising parts as well and sad stories. Litvin comes across as a man doing his duty for his country and never tries to claim credit for extraordinary deeds even if he did a few.

Starting out as an anti tank gunner in a Airborne Division he is wounded early during the battle of Kursk, from there he is transfered to a transportation battalion and is bombed by artillery and planes, he lives when others, even his friends die. At one point he has difficulties in disposing of a friends body. Then he is sentanced to a penal company for desertion when all he does is following a command that turns out to be a suggestion and not a proper command. His time with the penal company is very interesting. Then he gets reassigned to his transport unit and gets drafted from the rear units to the front replace combat losses. All through the story there are accounts of Litvin's personal experience and some very horrible incidents.

Many readers will also find interesting how Litvin is fighting the infantry mans war, very few tanks are metioned at all. In fact with 2/3 of all Germans fighting on the Eastern Front and the majority of both Germans and Russians fighting as infantry this tells how the war was for most, even if it isn't the most glamorous part.

Special mention should also go to Stuart Britton who completes the memoir by adding introductions or adds explanations to fit Litvin's experience into contex and big picture. They summarise the unfolding events and explain strategic and tactical events and I found these parts very useful and informative without casting a shade on Litvin's story. In many occasions Litvin would have been blissfully ignorant of what was really going on but as a reader it is good to be helped along by Britton.

Through Litvin one gets a very diverse view of the Soviet Army and not always its most glamorous side but the toil of the every day soldier. I heartly recommend it for anyone interested in WW2 memoirs and would like read about the experience from the Russian side.
