About the Author

Kenneth C. Laudon is a Professor of Information Systems at New York University’s Stern School of Business. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Stanford and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. He has authored 12 books dealing with electronic commerce, information systems, organizations, and society. Professor Laudon has also written more than 40 articles concerned with the social, organizational, and management impacts of information systems, privacy, ethics, and multimedia technology.

Professor Laudon’s current research is on the planning and management of large-scale information systems and multimedia information technology. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation to study the evolution of national information systems at the Social Security Administration, the IRS, and the FBI. Ken’s research focuses on enterprise system implementation, computer-related organizational and occupational changes in large organizations, changes in management ideology, changes in public policy, and understanding productivity change in the knowledge sector.

Ken Laudon has testified as an expert before the United States Congress. He has been a researcher and consultant to the Office of Technology Assessment (United States Congress), the Department of Homeland Security, and the Office of the President, several executive branch agencies, and Congressional Committees. Professor Laudon also acts as an in-house educator for several consulting firms and as a consultant on systems planning and strategy to several Fortune 500 firms.

At NYU’s Stern School of Business, Ken Laudon teaches courses on Managing the Digital Firm, Information Technology and Corporate Strategy, Professional Responsibility (Ethics), and Electronic Commerce and Digital Markets. Ken Laudon’s hobby is sailing.

Jane Price Laudon is a management consultant in the information systems area and the author of seven books. Her special interests include systems analysis, data management, MIS auditing, software evaluation, and teaching business professionals how to design and use information systems.

Jane received her Ph.D. from Columbia University, her M.A. from Harvard University, and her B.A. from Barnard College. She has taught at Columbia University and the New York University Graduate School of Business. She maintains a lifelong interest in Oriental languages and civilizations. The Laudons have two daughters, Erica and Elisabeth, to whom this book is dedicated.

A fascinating study indeed.

The history of Lebanon in the past two centuries is a relatively occulted subject. In particular the history of the formation of the lebanist idea seemed to be out of bounds for most historians.
Hakim does an excellent and thorough (academic, thus a bit too detailed for the casual reader maybe) job at unraveling it.
From the delirious first attempts of maronites to invent a past that fitted their views (1840 to 1850) to the pathetic behavior of the french and the english in the immediate aftermath of WWI, Hakim exposes a story that should be required reading for the lebanese people.
Highly recommended !

bread book comparison

I wanted a book that gave me not just recipes, but information on making bread. What makes a loaf firmer or softer? So I got a number of books from the library, and bought one book. Here is a comparison of them. I have NOT tried recipes from all of them, since at this point my main goal is information, not recipes (or 'formulas' as they like to call them).

Bread Science: The Chemistry and Craft of Making Bread, by Emily Buehler.
This is an independently published book; get it from Two Blue Books - it is more expensive used on Amazon than new direct from them. This book gives detailed coverage of bread making. There is a long chapter on the science of bread making that goes into more detail than you need, although it is interesting. You don't need to read that chapter; the rest of the book has enough information. And it is very good information on ingredients and processes. There are good diagrams on how to knead and how to shape. I found this useful and highly recommend this book.

The Bread Bible, by Rose Levy Beranbaum.
A big book with a lot of good information. This gives a lot of information on techniques, and includes useful information like expected ingredient ranges (water compared to flour). She covers equipment in depth, such as a comparison on mixing machines - and how to use each one. I am very pleased with this book, and highly recommend it. My understanding of how my actions impact the final bread have definitely improved with this and the Bread Science books. This is the book that finally turned the corner for me on how much kneading is required (more than I thought).

BakeWise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Baking with Over 200 Magnificent Recipes, by Shirley O. Corriher
This book only has a small chapter on making bread. It does give a decent overview, including the basics on shpaing, steaming, and such. But there certainly is not as much detail, and she does not emphasize flavor development the way some of the other books do. There are also no diagrams on how to knead or shape. Don't get this to be your primary book on making bread. Of course, there is a lot more in this book on other types of baking. The rest of the book chapters are called Cakes, Steam Leavened, Pies, and Cookies. There is some good information, but your cholesterol will suffer. She loves butter and cream, and makes no stab at making the recipes healthier. And I've never seen such a complicated brownie recipe before. I'm sure it's great. Just be aware what you are getting before you dive in to this book.

Local Breads: Sourdough and Whole-Grain Recipes from Europe's Best Artisan Bakers, by Daniel Leader
This book has information on ingredients, equipment, and techniques, including some diagrams, but the overview is higher level than in, say, The Bread Bible. Still, there is a lot of good information. The various sections include additional information and Q&A after some recipes. It seems to have a nice variety of recipes. Overall, this doesn't seem like a 1st choice for information but a good supplement book.

The Bread Baker's Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread, Peter Reinhart
Reinhart's books include a lot of story telling. This can be interesting, but certainly takes a lot of space. He includes his description of the required steps in the 2nd section of the book. There are some excellent pictures, such as the windowpane test. And there is a nice chart showing all the recipes and what techniques it uses, which is nice if you want to select a recipe that uses a biga, for example. He is a big advocate on slow rises and preferments, which most of these writers are. Personally, I prefer Beranbaum's book; I felt that book is better organized, has more information, and is a bit clearer. But this book is still a good choice, particularly if you prefer pictures to diagrams.

Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor, Peter Reinhart
Again, this has Reinhart's narrative style. His focus is, no surprise, whole grain breads. A lot of the basic information is repeated here, although in less detail than his Apprentice book. His recipes might initially strike you as very complicated. I made a 'spent grain bread'. It uses a soaker plus a biga, then makes the dough. However, it really was very straight forward and easy. So you might not want this as your only bread book, but it gives a lot of ideas for other breads.

With my new understanding on how to make bread, I expect I will be less dependent on pre-made recipes. That being said, having the recipes saves you from (failed) experiments and helps give new ideas. So for a good understanding, I recommend Beranbaum's "The Bread Bible" and Buehler's "Bread Science". I also might get Reinhart's "Whole Grain Breads" for a focus on those styles of bread.

SO HELPFUL! This book is fantastic at going deep into what makes bread, bread. It explains the science while also explaining recipes and the like. It's all very cohesive and simply stated, not confusing. I'ma professional pastry cook/bread baker and I found this a very enjoyable read.

An embarrassing confession: For years, I made lackluster homemade bread. Sometimes it came out okay, but usually not so much. I'd try to adapt recipes that often came out poorly and I didn't understand why. Sometimes I'd bake a loaf that came out perfectly, with perfect texture and excellent flavor ... but I couldn't reproduce it, and the next time I tried the same recipe, it flopped.

After reading this book, I finally understand what's going on with my dough, and I have learned how to make a truly excellent loaf of bread! The author provides clear, well-illustrated explanations for what is happening at each step of the process, so that even a kitchen klutz like me can grasp the concepts. My breads have become consistent and much more predictable, because I finally understand what I need to do at each step and *WHY*.

Although there are a few recipes in this book, it is not a recipe book. It is a concept book which enables you to adapt your own recipes once you understand how bread works.

I strongly recommend this book to lackluster bakers like myself, and also to all homeschool moms. This sure looks like a great unit study to me!

Great Book for Beginner/Intermediate Users

If you're just starting out using Camera Raw in Photoshop or Elements I think this is a great book to start with. If you are, however, fairly experienced, it probably is going to help you only nominally. I think the layout of the book is very nice and there is very little "fluff". I think the problem some of the reviewers have with this book is that it wasn't matched with their experience level. I personally feel this is a well done book even for intermediate users.

Excellent introduction

I bought this book because I had started shooting in RAW format and, whilst I could see a difference, I wasn't clear on all the advantages.

I picked up a copy of PS Elements, too (from Amazon, great price) and I'm already seeing a big improvement in my finished photos.

The book demystifies RAW and the benefits (and pitfalls) of using various tools within PSE (I have Paint Shop Pro too and most of the tools are available within that, too, although the book only shows you how to use PSE and the full Photoshop product).

For the price, I am very pleased with this book, as far as I'm concerned it paid for itself in terms of photo quality within days.

Before I got it I looked at a significant number of other RAW books (many costing two, three or more times the price of this one) in person, rather than online, but none were as clear as this book.

Great Introduction to Raw

I have been shooting with my Canon 30D/40D for sometime in jpeg. The whole while I knew there was a RAW mode but I didn't know how or why one uses it (other than the generic "it offers more control").

This book is an outstanding intro to answer both questions. In really clear style it gave both the theory (which for RAW is really important) and the practical applications of raw using and processing images with Adobe Camera RAW. The improvement in the final image quality from developing a raw file yourself vs letting the camera create a jpeg for you with its standard settings is really staggering .

The only part of the book I didn't think was "outstanding" was the chapter on workflow. Here the book was was "good." Having shot my last vacation in RAW, I understand completely why a book on RAW should address workflow as it becomes a major part of the process. The problem is the subject of workflow is really tied to whatever programs you are using (photoshop, Bridge, lightroom, iView, etc). The author did about as well as possible given the book is written to users of photoshop and elements. In th end, I went out and bought a book on Adobe Lightroom which is what I am not using.

I’m having a great time folding with my son and his friends

My son and I have always been lovers of origami so I am always looking for new books and special origami paper so he can enjoy the full experience when he sits down to fold his different projects. He has been getting a little bored with the normal basic folds and creations he has been enjoying for so long, so as he gets older he’s been wanting to do more challenging things since he does Origami often, and wanting to learn more advanced folds and be able to complete more advanced projects. So I got him this book, since we both loved the first book from this seller. When we got it he sat down with me and didn’t want to stop all night until he got this one fold right. Talk about keeping a child occupied! This book was awesome for me and awesome for him, and he has been at it every day this week. The book shows how to do each fold and with instructions for easy understanding. I think this book is perfect for those at any age with a little experience in origami and needing a bit more of a challenge when creating!

Challenging and Fun!

This project is a bit challenging, but this book explains each step in full detail in addition to great diagrams that help guide you as you are folding. My nephew had a lot of fun making this train with me, and he was so proud of himself when he finished it. If you are into Origami, you need to add this train to your collection. It is so adorable and the book does an amazing job of explaining how to do all of the different folds required to make it. I highly recommend this book. Thumbs Up!

Directions could be more clear...

Obviously, you need to be an advanced folder to take this on. Even still, there are loads of pics that show the paper after it's been folded and unfolded. I'm not a great fan of trying to work out what happened. Still, it's a really cool concept!

MISSING PAGES...

I watch the show and I heard the comics were a bit different, so I decided I should read them. So far, I'm enjoying it until I just about reached the halfway point. There about 20 pages that looks like they ran out of ink when they were printing. THIS SUCKS!! I missing major parts and I think someone died during the faded pages....

Do they not have people for quality control? Sigh...

So heavy, you could kill a walker with it.

This entire compendium is a steal. It's highway robbery and we are ALL committing the crime but it's fine, because this is what they wanted. This compendium alone save you more than $60 worst( probably more) and it only cost $36.00?(at least at the time I bought it) That alone is enough of a reason to buy. So much content for so little money, as is the case with the rest of the compendiums.

I'm going to try stray away from as much spoilers as possible but excuse me now if i happen to spoil anything.
This series continues to be fantastic. Characters gets more developed, stories get more wilder, and villains get maniacal. This new guy Negan, believe me when I say this (do not underestimate me) you are going to HATE this guy with every atom in your body. Every cell will yearn with anger. If you hated the Governor for any reason what so ever and couldn't him in the slightest bit, maybe you might not want to read this compendium after all. Negan is vile, evil, horrible, any synonym that derives from bad, he is that and so much more. There are times I wanted to rip out pages just because I didn't want his drawings there. When they put his character on the show, they are going to tone him down levels that weren't even known to be possible. Seriously, half his dialogue is F-bombs, the show probably begin to stray far away at this point in the comics more than it has even done. Makes me wish the show was on HBO instead of AMC.
There are going to character deaths that are going to upset you, I'm warning you right now (I don't consider this a spoiler, considering this is TWD and nobody is safe, so you already knew this was coming) I say this now, don't get attached to anyone, because nobody is safe after this. You might even hate Kirkman for what he has done. He is going to test your emotional limits and I tell you this now, you might not be able to handle it.
New characters get introduced, as is with TWD, some lovable, some dreadful. My favorite is still Paul Jesus Monroe and yes, I know, he got introduced into the end of the second compendium, but he develops into a much better character at the end of all this.

In all honesty, I could sit here and write everything I feel about the TWD and this compendium and what the story has become so far, I could write 20 essays but I think there is limit to how much you can right on an amazon review, or maybe there isn't, who knows. I'm just trying to stray from spoilers as much as I can to let you enjoy it as much as possible.
Regardless, if you love the world of TWD,and have made it this far, you are probably going to make it to the of this end as well. It's going to be another journey just like the first two. There will be ups and downs and moments of serious agonizing torment but you will get through this and you will throughly enjoy this. You have my word

comics of TWD are a must own for new comers and comic readers alike that think the show is all there is!

i won't go into detail like some pro critic, writer, just as a simple fan of both tv show and these even BETTER comic books! the comics naturally are better than the tv show, tv show is for people that hate reading or lack the attention span on reading, even books with pictures, i like both walking dead and like game of thrones the comic/books differ i'd say greatly for the most part slower sometimes fast at times or more graphic or less graphic at times, naturally, depending on the channel it's on. i do love game of throne tv show though can be very filler feeling/slow at time i guess so they don't pass up the comics, same goes for GoT show which they have passed up the books...point is TWD comics are amazing fun to read more than once! sophie is still alve maggie and the late glenn adopted her after carol killed herself in the prison, love/hate negan! people think he is the most evil villain but he lives by a code! unlike the governor who was was mor grazy in the comic books he raped michone and cut ricks hand off when first meeting him! then killed his wife and their unborn baby during the prison war! he killed tyresse not hershel in the comic, i just think they are both fresh watching it if you wanna see different people live/die and comic same thing well watch and read so you get THE FULL COMPLETE YET TWO DIFFERENT STORIES/VERSIONS!! the comics are just fun to lay back n read and enough a different aspect of what is going on! true no daryl in show but they have jesus later and he is a samurai ninja kung fu fighting mo fo! don't like that laura, ricks wifes baby lived as to many babies now as maggie as in comic tv show (so far) does live! so ricks baby is pointless to be honest giving maggies baby after glenn has died a much less impact, sadly! also rick is still in love with andrea in the comic she is a bad bad mo fo!!! seriously bad! i would say smarter even badder than rick too!!! especially when it comes to negan! maggie is a bad mo fo too!!! machone is too but ends up getting with ezikeil not ever rick so that is strange as a fist comic reader (since 1980!) but i do enjoy both if TWD was on HBO the gore killing rape scene(s) woulda been disturbing! like the comics! wish rick got his hand cut off like the comic but understand why they didn't even kirkman regrets doing it in the comic but i like it. OH sad sad thing i hated in tv show was DALE being a whining cry baby weakling pacifist! in the comic he was a true rough tough old goat gangster! and showed andrea how to shoot and become the great she is now still in the comic! i think if you hate comics this more adult themed great comic/graphic novel is worth owning! as writing this now the whisperer war 1-6 just ended and they are on a new chapter and negan broke he bat across beta's back, yet he lives even after the war yes a spoiler he buries his bat has a funeral for it haha in 6 of 6 whisperer war issue #162! now issue #163 is at and the whisperer's and beta lead to alexandria a unseen of huge of horde of walkers! which break through negan and rick even work fighting side by side now even though negan still has a smart "butt" mouth and the issue ends till march so...now i collect single issues which i hate doing or if you do too wait months sadly till the next 5-6 comic story line volume comes out, in march 1-6 of the whisperer war in volume 27 will come out but i will get it then sell the single issues, you don't get the cool covers in the TPB collecting volumes not the 3 huge compendiums! BUT, i say if you are a first time collector of buying the TWD comics/HIGHLY WORTH IT even if it is the only comic(s) you choose to EVER own!! this is it! way different than the show still show still different than the comics where it count really! but both great to read/watch though the reading is 99 percent better the tv show is just a visual for the non readers...but i SAY the comics are a must own! if NEW to collecting avoid most well first pricey 24 volumes easy and on amazon DO IT THIS WAY TO GET YOUR COLLECTION STARTED FAST AND EASY!!!....ON AMAZON WAY CHEAPER i started with the 3 compendiums at $34 each!! instead of $65 at comic shops!!! SO, new readers own these and start buying here easy 'n cheaper! in this order!! TWD COMPENDIUM ONE-ISSUES #1-48, TWD COMPENDIUM TWO-ISSUES #49-96, TWD COMPENDIUM THREE #97-144, (then) VOLUME 25 NO TURNING BACK, VOLUME 26 CALL TO ARMS, now wait till march buy VOLUME 27 THE WHISPERER WAR! or buy the issues if you wanna catch up then sell 'em, then buy the volumes! but by the time you read all these the whisperer war volume will be out! and the next volume too but like me if you read fast as i said march #163 of the new on will be out, after the 4-6 issues they wait like 2 months before they make the a VOLUME it will be years before they make compendium four! so stick with the issues to be up-to-date! or wait till march for volume 27 the whisperer war! now this new one is out 1st issue out now in feb. i think BETA lived cos WE MAY SEE HIM in the future i THINK HE AND NEGAN need a showdown!!!! for what he did to alpha!!! BUT I SEMI-SPOIL the comic version assuming if you read then you're caught up like me! for the new ones i give you serious reason to buy the comics cos even if they show SOME of this on the tv show it is a long way off! PLUS THE LET BACK ON THE GORE SADLY from the tv show like in the comics cos pc whining weaklings cried about the ultra violence against negan killing glenn and abe! which was in the comics!!! but i guess in color looks sicker sad ppl whined about this and TWD went back on this new season 7 and cut-out, toned down on the bloody violence sadly!! GET THESE COMICS PLEASE IN THE ORDER I SAID IN ALL CAPS then you'll be caught up fast! then if ya want buy the issues NOW at a comic shop only $3 a month guys so...THERE YOU GO, I TRIED MY BEST, FOR NON COMIC COLLECTORS THE BEST WAY TO SAVE MONEY AND GET THESE!
