Terrific book, compact and easy to get through without sacrificing too much detail

My professors highly recommended this book, and I grudgingly bought it. I am really happy with it as it provides important context and explanation as well as interesting stories relating to the topic at hand while remaining compact and portable. For a textbook- it's fantastic. For lite evening reading... doable I guess.

Great book for serious studies

This is a great book for anyone seriously studying microbes! The chapters are short and readable and it is a valuable reference to hold on to long after a class is over. This is one of the few textbooks I don't regret spending money on.

Not a complete source for medical students.

The organization of this textbook is horrible, and I have found numerous important facts missing from the chapters. Examples: Quelling reaction is never stated in the entire textbook (used to diagnose strept pneumonia), and there is no mention in the entire textbook of Bacitracin sensitivity, even though it is used to differentiate Group A from group B streptococcus. Sadly my school has chosen this book to be my only source of information, which is now greatly lacking. I would highly recommend supplementing your readings with First Aid of the Basic Sciences if you are a medical student. I wish I would have realized how terrible of a book this was earlier on.

With this much anticipated first novel, told from the point of view of an illiterate, brutalized Harlem teenager, Sapphire (American Dreams), a writer affiliated with the Nuyorican poets, charts the psychic damage of the most ghettoized of inner-city inhabitants. Obese, dark-skinned, HIV-positive, bullied by her sexually abusive mother, Clareece, Precious Jones is, at the novel's outset, pregnant for the second time with her father's child. (Precious had her first daughter at 12, named Little Mongo, "short for Mongoloid Down Sinder, which is what she is; sometimes what I feel I is. I feel so stupid sometimes. So ugly, worth nuffin.") Referred to a pilot program by an unusually solicitous principal, Precious comes under the experimental pedagogy of a lesbian miracle worker named, implausibly enough, Blue Rain. Under her angelic mentorship, Precious, who has never before experienced real nurturing, learns to voice her long suppressed feelings in a journal. As her language skills improve, she finds sustenance in writing poetry, in friendships and in support groups-one for "insect" survivors and one for HIV-positive teens. It is here that Sapphire falters, as her slim and harrowing novel, with its references to Harriet Tubman, Langston Hughes and The Color Purple (a parallel the author hints at again and again), becomes a conventional, albeit dark and unresolved, allegory about redemption. The ending, composed of excerpts from the journals of Precious's classmates, lends heightened realism and a wider scope to the narrative, but also gives it a quality of incompleteness. Sapphire has created a remarkable heroine in Precious, whose first-person street talk is by turns blisteringly savvy, rawly lyrical, hilariously pig-headed and wrenchingly vulnerable. Push opens to find Precious?fat, unloved, illiterate, deeply confused, routinely raped by her father, and physically and emotionally molested by her mother?enduring her second incestuous pregnancy. Crawling from self-hatred and violent loneliness to determination and, occasionally, hope, Precious enters a pre-GED program, learns to read, bears her second child, and breaks from her parents, all under the inspiration of Blue Rain, her steadfastly encouraging and apparently tireless new teacher. Precious's name loses its irony but soon takes on a dark new meaning as she learns the extent of her father's abuse. Written as an internal monolog and journal entries by Precious, with her rudimentary spelling skills and abrupt transitions, Push is compelling, graphic, and occasionally facile but disturbing and not soon forgotten. Recommended.

I must admit, when I first began reading Push, I was a little uncomfortable with the narrative perspective because it was so blunt in its descriptions. However, as hard of a time as I had with reading this text, I had an even harder time putting it down. Sapphire's novel forced me to face the reality of the verbally and sexually abusive life that Precious Jones was forced to live in. Unfortunately, Precious is not alone and Sapphire took the first step in acknowleding this problem by putting it into words, even though the words make some uncomfortable. Once I started reading and listening to Precious, I could not let go. Precious Jones is a sixteen year old girl, verbally and physically abused by her mother and sexually abused by her father. She gives birth to two children, her own father also being father of her children. However, this book is not only an attack on the abuse that occurs within a family. Sapphire also places blame on the educational system that sits back while their students are deprived of educational advancement because of their situations at home. There are so many children, like Precious, who want to learn but come to believe that they are dumb because no one took the time to examine the problem closer. I hurt for Precious because she had no self esteem, how could she when her father stripped everything from her, including her virginity, before she was even out of elementary school. I could not put the book down without knowing how she was going to rise above her circumstances. I got so wrapped up in this book, believing in Precious and everything she went through. Sapphire's book involved so many emotions and was so inspiring that I believe no student or teacher should go without reading this book.

You will never forget Precious Jones

Claireece "Precious" Jones leads a tough life. She is abused by her mother, raped by her father, she is poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and mostly unnoticed. She is pregnant by her father with her second child. She is 16 years old and still in Junior High School.

When a school administrator finds out that she is pregnant again - they quickly try to find another source of education for her. She is sent to alternative school. It is in this new school where Precious meets her new teacher, Ms. Rain. Ms. Rain is the first teacher who has ever taken the time to understand and really help Precious - along with some of her classmates. For the first time in her life, Precious feels like she belongs somewhere. She connects with her classmates, but especially with her teacher. Here she experiences the kindness of others, something completely foreign to her. She also comes to realize that she is not alone.

To be honest, I had never heard of this novel before I began to hear of the movie "Precious". I like to read the novel before I watch the movie, so when I began to read all the reviews on Precious I quickly ran out and purchased a copy of Push.

I really didn't know what to expect - but to be quite frank, I was really taken in by this novel. I did find it a little disturbing to read - here's a sample of how most of the book read:

" I was left back when I was twelve because I had a baby for my fahver. That was in 1983. I was out of school for a year. This is gonna be my second baby. My daughter got down sinder. She's retarded. I had got left back in the second grade too, when I was seven, cause I couldn't read (and I still peed on myself). I should be in the twelf' grade so I can gone 'n graduate. But I'm not. I'm in the ninfe grade".

Once I got past the grammar and spelling issues - I was basically moved to tears. Precious' struggle is so raw, disturbing, sad... and yet there was hope within it too. I could not put it down and read the whole thing in one sitting. The whole time you're reading this you can't help but think that there are people out there who have lived this sort of life - and it makes it even more heart-breaking to read.

This is a story that will stick with you long after you have put it down. It will open your eyes to the reality that these issues do occur and will make you rethink your own problems (which seem so insignificant when compared to a life like this). But as you close the cover you will come to realize that you will never forget Precious Jones.

Unflinching, Gritty Portrayal

This is a unique book, dealing with subjects not usually dealt with---incest, abuse, living life on the last rung of the ladder.

It is told in a spare, direct prose style for the most part, with some poetry towards the end of the book.

PUSH tells, in the first person, the story of a black girl named Cleerice Precious Jones. Precious is one of those people, who never had a real chance in life.

Precious falls through the cracks of the system that is suppose to save children like her.

This is not a book for the easily disturbed or faint of heart. This is a raw, honest, hard-hitting book.

Academically sound but misses the point

Weinstein here executes an academically well-trained description of the heavy metal genre, but in doing so agglutinates several generations of metal into one pseudo-genre which, not surprisingly, does not fit the broader conclusions academics must draw from sociological studies. This book repeats the classic error of all academics in assuming all metal is Motley Crue or derivates thereof, and consequently, the book is completely obsolete in the current time. Well-written and smoothly flowing it is an afternoon's read and provides great supporting evidence for any mainstreaming or assimilation of the heavy metal lifestyle in academia.

The Ultimate Book on Heavy Metal

This is the bible of Heavy Metal for Metalheads throughout the world. I have scoured the universities and libraries for books regarding H.M., and this book is not only the best, but is referenced with awe and respect by every other text discussing H.M. If you love Metal, you MUST own this book. While it might seem slightly outdated (1991 - 1992 published), it is a fascinating look at H.M., and provides key information on the development of H.M., the dreaded P.M.R.C. and Metal detractors (always a favorite topic), and H.M. social status, plus much more. There is (thank God) a new Weinstein book about Metal coming out in April 2000 called "Heavy Metal: The Music and Its Culture", and it's in paperback form, no less! Cheap books are good. La cultura del heavy metal, efectivamente, puede verse como la interacci�n de los media, las bandas y los fans y el concierto de heavy metal como una Metal Epiphany. Por otro lado, y esto es importante, tambi�n se hace menci�n de los defectos del metal como la Homofobia y el machismo, dos defectos que parecen se est�n superando. Es pues este libro, muy recomendable tanto para headbanguers como para cualquiera que quiera acercarse al metal con espiritu cr�tico y abierto. �Gloria eterna la metal!

Great text to learn a diff kind of acctg

Im a for profit acctg major so i am very pleased to say this book breaks down the not for profit concepts very well. It has lots of examples, but i wished the chapter summary covered more of the chapter. Very well writte and easy to follow. Price from the amazion seller beats the college bookstore hands down.

Even the cover was unblemished. And the hand written note impressed me. I buy a LOT of books through Amazon, and this is the first time I've had anyone take the time to write a personal note. I have used this product since Studio 8 and produce proam video for my church. It is generally intuitive, incredibly powerful as it comes with more effects than I'll ever use. I didn't give it five stars simply because there is some room for improvement in the UI. I would recommend it to the advanced amateur as well as the starting out, part time pro.
