Great translation of Arabian Nights
By Mark Daniels
Haddawy's translation of the Arabian Nights is the best I've found, with just the right amount of adult emphasis on the tales' erotic elements - not too little or too much (like Burton). While translating, Haddawy makes some word substitutions which are agreeable (I liked his "dervishes" over "calenders"), but other substitutions unfortunately take away from the rich Middle Eastern/fantasy setting ("God" instead of Allah, "sword" instead of scimitar, "demon" instead of genie).

A note to those new to Arabian Nights: the stories-within-stories trope gets complicated at times, but that's part of the Nights' artistry. "Shahrazad said that the tailor told the king of China that the barber told the guests that he [the barber] had said to the caliph that his second brother..." I'm not making this up; this is a real example from the book. Readers who can keep straight the ever-deepening strata of stories should justly pat themselves on the back afterward, when the narrative quickly climbs back to the uppermost level at story's end.

Nit-picking aside, I still think this is one of the best translations of Arabian Nights around. Recommended.

A Good Compilation With Some Annoying Quirks
By Neodoering
This book is a compilation of about a quarter of the Arabian Nights tales by Husain Haddawy. It does not contain any of the most famous Nights tales, such as Aladdin, Sindbad or Maaruf the Cobbler, but it does contain many other stories which are enjoyable in their own rights. There is also a good introduction which discusses the various versions of the Nights and their value to the reader. Of course Haddawy dismisses older versions as outdated relics, but this is only to be expected.

This edition has some annoying quirks which lessened my enjoyment of the overall collection. Instead of calling God, Allah, and keeping the Middle Eastern flavor of the work, Haddawy calls Him God. He calls djinnis "demons" instead of calling them djinnis, so for example someone finding a magic lamp will rub it, and a "demon" will appear to grant three wishes. And, as already noted, this edition does not contain any of the most famous stories from the Nights. This version is heavy on the realistic stories and literary tales and light on the fantasy tales, so for example the tale of the ebony horse is not here, nor the tale of Ali Baba and the 40 thieves, nor the tale of Aladdin. There are some fantasies here, such as the story of the four-colored fishes and the cursed prince, but not many. This edition did not impress me as much as the Burton edition did, and my recommendation for it is lukewarm at best.

The most accurate English translation
By I
The translation by Haddawy is very accurate, although like others, I would prefer that some Middle Eastern flavour was preserved (no need to translate "zeb", "jinn", "wali" and such). It's true that some of the most famous stories from One Thousand and One Nights are not included in this compillation. This has to do with the fact that this book is based on an Arabic manuscript that does not include those stories. However, there is a separate book by Haddawy with those other stories.

Overall, I prefer this edition over Richard Burton's. I don't mean to say that Burton's edition is bad, but I feel that it doesn't preserve the intricacies of the original.

I love Cole and Maddie's HEA!!!
By Angie J
Saving Us by H.D’Agostino
I beta read this book for the author for an honest opinion.
Did ya read Irreparably Broken?? Then you KNOW how it ended right??? Well let me say that our dear author still kicks butt in this book and leaves us WANTING AND WAITING for book 3!! She is a really mean lady in case you didn’t know…but I still love her like a sister from another mister.
So this book starts with Maddie a mess and hiding from Cole. She is going to push him away so as to keep him safe from Richard. (In case you didn’t know ,this is the hashtag for this book #DieRichardDie) Well that doesn’t last long as they soon find themselves back together thanks to the meddling of Wes, Cole’s best friend/Brother from another mother. Also I am claiming #TeamWes and you ladies better keep your hands OFF!! Right Heather? Right? I get Wes right?? PA-LEASE!!!!!!!!
So Cole is really laying his heart out for Maddie and letting her know that she is it for him. Maddie finally tells Cole, and us readers, about the LAST TIME with Richard. OMG I don’t know if I was mad at the world for letting that stuff happen or Mad at Heather for letting it happen to Maddie!! LOL AS much as Maddie is opening up, our Cole is hiding his demons from childhood that shows us the bond between him and Wes.
So as you can expect, Richard (#DieRichardDie) causes a lot of drama for Maddie and even goes to trial to DEFEND the attack on Cole. Well I was never as proud of Maddie as I was the day she looks Richard in the eye and tells her story…her truth….her abuses. YAY MADDIE!! BUUUUT in true Heather form, will she let this book end nice and HEA …NOPE, she gives us a gut wrenching cliffy….Ladies, it might be worse than the last book and it is a killer ending.
The side story for this book is Wes and his demons/ex-girlfriend who destroyed his heart. Plus, I am loving the spunky Angela, Cole’s sister, who moves in with Cole after her life falls apart. The scene with the two frenemies talking about what Angela catches Wes doing on the sofa…Omg soooooooo funny!!

Leaves you wanting more...
By Roz
Gifted an Advanced Readers Copy for an honest review.

In Saving Us, the story picks up with Maddie and Cole after the crazy cliffhanger at the end or Irreparably Broken. I was definitely anxious to get into the story and see how things would unfold in their relationship. The frustrating part about this novel for me was that it seemed like too much was happening in one book. With the direction this story is going, I understand that Heather was trying to set up her plot for book three. However, there was so much squeezed into this story, and it was happening so fast, it took away from the believability factor. Things seemed to be handled with more care in book one than in book two.

I'm a huge fan of dialogue. I really am--but there is something to be said for narrative paragraphs. The depth that I was looking for in book one was lacking even more in book two. The dynamics in the relationship between Maddie and Cole, Cole and Angela, and Cole and Wes felt under appreciated. There's just so much baggage in each of those relationships that I got frustrated with the ease at which certain situations were handled. Conflict came and went and I had a hard time tracking why characters were acting a certain way, considering what I knew about them. I just think it could have been smoother and more believable had I had more explanation; if I had the chance to be in Cole and Maddie's heads more than in their dialogue.

Aside from the disconnect I felt in this story, it did leave the door wide open for another novel. I will say that nothing that bothered me in this novel would hinder me from seeing how the story ends. Heather is very good at leaving you wanting more.

Holy Cliffhanger!
By Ink Angels Book Blog
Ink Angels Book Blog received an ARC of Saving Us in exchange for an honest review.

D'Agostino has done it again, hooked me with another great book, that is! Saving Us picked up right where you might expect, in the clutches of the major cliffhanger from the first book in the series, Irreparably Broken. Though, I love the suspense D'Agostino adds to this series, I cannot hide my relief that things seemed to smooth out rather quickly for Cole and Maddie.

And then the twist. I did not expect this book to end with a cliffhanger, but I have to say this one is even bigger than the first. This Ink Angel is excited to see what happens next.

Multicultural Citizenship: A Liberal Theory of Minority Rights (Oxford Political Theory), by Will Kymlicka

The increasingly multicultural fabric of modern societies has given rise to many new issues and conflicts, as ethnic and national minorities demand recognition and support for their cultural identity. This book presents a new conception of the rights and status of minority cultures. It argues that certain "collective rights" of minority cultures are consistent with liberal democratic principles, and that standard liberal objections to such rights can be answered. However, the author emphasizes that no single formula can be applied to all groups, and that the needs and aspirations of immigrants are very different from those of indigenous peoples and national minorities. He looks at issues such as language rights, group representation, religious education, federalism, and secession--issues central to an understanding of multicultural politics, but which have been neglected in contemporary liberal theory. Scholars of political theory and philosophy, as well as the general reader, will find this work to be the most comprehensive analysis to date of this crucial political issue.

Review

"This is a very important book, one that is indispensable for the present discussion of multiculturalism....An immensely rich, informative, and above all clarifying work, written by a first-class philosophical mind, animated by a humane outlook. It ought to be compulsory reading for all those who want to carry on the debate in this area."--American Political Science Review

"In a powerful argument for the compatibility between liberal theory and "group differentiated rights," Kymlicka resolves the tension between liberalism and group rights by contending that individuals must exist within a "societal culture" in order to express their political and cultural identity....An important addition to liberal theory and necessary for students and scholars at all levels."--Choice

"Will Kymlicka is among the most important and interesting liberal political theorists writing today."--International Affairs

"Clear, unpolemical, and open-minded, it nicely marries normative political theory and institutional analysis...This is a fine book, and the one to which students of multiculturalism must first be sent."--The Journal of Politics

The increasingly multicultural fabric of modern societies has given rise to many new issues and conflicts, as ethnic and national minorities demand recognition and support for their cultural identity. This book presents a new conception of the rights and status of minority cultures. It argues that certain sorts of collective rights for minority cultures are consistent with liberal-democratic principles, and that standard liberal objections to recognizing such rights on grounds of individual freedom, social justice, and national unity can be answered. However, Professor Kymlicka emphasizes that no single formula can be applied to all groups, and that the needs and aspirations of immigrants are very different from those of indigenous peoples and national minorities. The book discusses issues such as language rights, group representation, land claims, federalism, and secession - issues which are central to understanding multicultural politics, but which have been surprisingly neglected in contemporary liberal theory.

About the Author
Will Kymlicka is Canada Research Chair in Political Philosophy at Queen's University and visiting professor at the Central European University in Budapest. He has written and edited many titles, including Contemporary Political Philosophy and Multiculturalism in Asia. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, as well as the current President of the American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy.

An excellent treatise on a thorny issue
By miquel strubell
This is a long-awaited book. Those who believe that the liberal tradition requires a back row, laissez-faire attitude to the problems of minorities are put to flight.
Kymlicka shows clearly that there has been a long tradition of leading liberals who have felt that in order for national minorities to be as free as majorities, they need affirmative action to counteract the all-pervading influence of dominant cultures, through the education system, the media, and the general majority discourse.
He sees the individual's freedom as the right to belong to his of her ancestral group, and this of course means that unless the group's rights are recognised and implemented, the individual that belongs to the group cannot be a free person. Kymlicka distinguishes neatly between minorities whose aim is to be considered and treated as the same as anyone else (that is, anyone belonging to the dominant group): women, Afroamericans, etc.; and between minorities who wish not to lose their differentiated culture and identity: American Indians, Quebeckers, Catalans, Welsh, etc. He points out to majority members that what they take for granted is neither the only worldview possible, nor the best worldview, and defends minorities' right to hold other views, their own.
He is also masterly in drawing the limits to allowing national minorities full control over their own affairs: naturally, no-one should tolerate practices, however ancient, which clash with universal human rights. These include the individual's freedom to leave the group, the rejection of female ablation, etc.
The fact that the book has been published in Catalan attests to its international appeal.

important work
By Claire Hunter
Along with Tamir's "Liberal Nationalism" and Miller's "On Nationality", "Multicultural Citizenship" is fast becoming a classic work on liberal nationalism. Of the 3, Kymlicka's may be the most clearly laid out. It uses case material, particularly that of aboriginals in Canada, very effectively. A more refined version of some of the arguments presented in "Liberalism, Community, Culture". Highly recommended.

Mixed-bag
By A Reader
This book is a mixed bag- there are interesting and important arguments for a brand of multi-cultural citizenship, and for the idea that national minorities are morally distinct from immigrant groups. However, there are also serious problems. The historical analysis is often at least somewhat off- it's very odd to make a big deal that 19th centruy liberals supported nationalism w/o noting, at all, that this was largely due to their insidious racism and support for colonialism, even by liberals like Mill. That this isn't even mentioned or considered is a shocking omission. That's just one of many examples. Often the book seems to vastly over-generalize from the Canadian experience, w/o making this clear or noting what's being done. Much of the discussion of immigrant groups doesn't really fit that well w/ the facts, and lacks the sympathetic insight that Kymlicka displays towards national minorities. Several of the main thesies are challanged by the experience of the EU, and no mention of that is made at all. (Some of that is surely due to the book being nearly 10 years old, but even at that time some of the claims about what people want, what's possible, etc. were already being challanged by developments in the EU.) SO, the book should be read and considered, but the arguments are too full of gaps to be anywhere close to convincing now.

Review

'In this sparkling new book, Philippa Williams describes in rich detail the social practices binding Hindus and Muslims together in the Indian city of Varanasi. Williams not only challenges received wisdom on religious communal relations in India but also demonstrates the crucial importance of examining the social reproduction of everyday peace. A tour de force.'

— Craig Jeffrey, Professor of Development Geography, University of Oxford, UK

'Philippa Williams' new book is in the best tradition of interdisciplinary and critical work on peace. Research and theory about peacemaking and peacebuilding has historically shifted from dealing with inter-state war to how peace is configured through everyday social relations. Work on the latter approach is becoming increasingly sophisticated and interdisciplinary. It often draws upon examples now becoming visible because of more sophisticated methodologies and theory, from across the world, and as opposed to the Eurocentric exemplars commonly used in political science. Williams' study pioneers new understandings of the spatial and social production of peace especially in subaltern frameworks such as some of India's Muslim communities.'

— Oliver Richmond, Professor of International Relations, Peace & Conflict Studies, University of Manchester, UK

Providing important insights into political geography, the politics of peace, and South Asian studies, this book explores everyday peace in north India as it is experienced by Muslims living and workingalongsideHindus. Based on over 14 months of qualitative and archival research in the regional city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, it looks specifically at the everyday experiences and perspectives of the Muslim community to see how peace is socially and spatially produced. The author challenges normative understandings of Hindu-Muslim relations as relentlessly violent and instead demonstrates the ways in which Muslims are orientated towards securing and maintaining peace within India’s secular state. In doing so, she dispels the notion of peace as a romantic endpoint occurring only after violence and political maneuverings.

The author also examines the ways in which geographical concepts such as space, place, and scale can inform and problematize understandings of peace. She applies a critical eye to understanding how practices of peace and non-violence are themselves inherently political, and play out through different spatial and material geographies.Filled with examples and case studies from the individual to the national level, this study uses the lens of geography to redefine the politics of peace and concepts of citizenship, agency, secular politics, and democracy.
