About the Author
Avinash Dixit is Emeritus John J.F. Sherrerd University Professor of Economics at Princeton University, where he offered his popular freshman course in game theory. He is among the world’s leading economists, having made fundamental contributions in several major fields as well as in game theory. He is the author of many books, including Dixit/Nalebuff: Thinking Strategically (Norton, 1991), Dixit/Pindyck: Investment Under Uncertainty (Princeton University Press, 1994), and Dixit/Nalebuff: The Art of Strategy (Norton, 2009).

Barry J. Nalebuff is the Milton Steinbach Professor at the Yale School of Management. Nalebuff applies game theory to business strategy and is the co-founder of one of America's fastest-growing companies, Honest Tea.

Buy "Thinking Strategically"

Of course. It is an updated version of their best selling book [Thinking Strategically]. I have taught an introduction to Game Theory course to college undergraduates for years and used their earlier version "Thinking strategically" as a textbook. Nalebuff and Dixit's effort on updating their classic became less than good news to college students. They put too much materials about their ABC documentary which was taken under Dr. Nalebuff's guidance while trying to put too much materials in otherwise a simple-clear book. I strongly recommend you to go to the bookstore and buy their earlier version "thinking strategically" rather than this 'confusing/messy" version.

Unnecessary after "Thinking Strategically"

There is absolutely no need to read this book if you've read Thinking Strategically: The Competitive Edge in Business, Politics, and Everyday Life.

I'm not certain why they exist as two separate books. The content is almost identical, and 90% of the examples in this one were lifted from that. I have no idea why this is touted as a "sequel." It is not. It's just Thinking Strategically repackaged (but I will say that its package is prettier). The tagline says that it's a "guide to success in business and life," but it is not. It is game theory explained in an accessible way.

I love game theory. I studied economics in college, and game theory had been my favorite class. I enjoyed Thinking Strategically and looked forward to reading this one. I was disappointed. Had I not read Thinking Strategically, I probably would have found this enjoyable, but I'm giving it two stars for the false advertising.

A masterpiece

This is simply one of the best books I had read on either game theory or strategy. It's so well written and organized in layman terms with so many great stories/examples that all who care to read only 50+ pages will learn much from it. In short, highly recommended (at least for those who had not read the authors' previous work before per warning of other reviewers)!

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.

What makes something a game: you have to take into account the objectives and strategies of the other players. When guessing a number picked at random, the number isn't trying to hide. You can take the engineer's mindset and divide the interval in two and do the best possible. But if you are playing a game, then you have to consider how the other player will be acting and how those decisions will influence your strategy. Pg6
Sailboat racing offers the chance to observe an interesting reversal of a "follow the leader" strategy. The leading sailboat usually copies the strategy of the trailing boat. When the follower racks, so does the leader. The imitates the follower even when the follower is clearly pursuing a poor strategy. Why? Because in sailboat racing close doesn't count: only winning matters. |If you have the lead. The surest way to stay ahead is to play monkey see, monkey do. Stock market analysts and economic forecasters are not immune to this copycat strategy. The leader forecasters have an incentive to follow the pack and produce predictions similar to everyone else's. This way people are unlikely to change their perception of these forecasters' abilities. On the other hand, new comers take the risky strategies; they tend to predict boom or doom. Usually they are wrong and are never heard of again but now and again they are proven correct and move to the ranks of the famous. pg11
In poker, player battle this paradox when it comes to raising the stakes. If a player bets only when he ahs a strong hand, the other players will soon figure this out. In response to a raise, most other players will fold, and he'll never win a big pot. Those who raise back will have even stronger hands, and so our poor player will end up a big loser. To get others to bet against a strong hand, they have to think you might be bluffing. To convince them of this possibility, it helps to bet often enough so that you must be bluffing some of the time. This leads to an interesting dilemma. You'd like others to fold against your bluffs and thereby win with weak hands. But that won't lead to high pot victories. To convince others to raise your bets, you also need to get caught bluffing. pg24
A critical lesson in game theory: You need to understand the other player's perspective. You need to consider what they know, what motivates them, and even how they think about you. George Bernard Shaw's quip on the golden rule was to not do unto others as you would have them do unto you - their tastes may be different. When thinking strategically, you have to work extra hard to understand the perspective and interactions of all the other players in the game, including ones who may be silent. That brings us to one last point. You may be thinking you are playing one game, but it is only part of a larger game. There is always a larger game. Pg28
If you have to take some risks, it is often better to do so as quickly as possible. This is obvious to those who play tennis....That way, if you fail on your first attempt, the game won't be over. You may still have time to take some other options that can bring you back to or even ahead of where you were. The wisdom of taking risks early applies to most aspects of life, whether it be career choices, investments, or dating. Pg63

Don't be mislead by the title!

I read the original book some years ago when I'd just started competitive obedience training with my dog. I thought it was about dog training. I've just finished the revised edition.

The truth is it's about changing and shaping behaviour. Whether it be people; partners, children, students, yourself, or animals; dogs, cats, elephants, fish, dolphins, you name it, you can use the principles and techniques in this book to improve relationships and behaviours as well as to train specific skills.

Karen Pryor's work is based on the work of BF Skinner who was a Harvard Professor and largely credited as being the father of behavioural psychology. Pryor's book, however is not some dry theoretical textbook. It's lively, entertaining and with many and diverse examples to inspire you to try out these techniques. It pushes the boundaries of behavioural conditioning (anchoring in NLP terminology) and what you can do with it and applies it to just about any context you can think of; from the way international governments relate to each other, to getting your teenager to keep his room tidy, to teaching a seal to talk! (Yes, really)

A philosophy
Pryor explains the philosophy behind the techniques and answers any questions you might have about `why' positive reinforcement works better than punishment in the majority of situations. While it isn't a step-by-step manual, I gleaned enough to teach my parrot, Shaggy to go to a box, pick up a stick, run through a tube with it and then deliver it to my hand. You can see a video of him doing this here [...]as well as a couple of videos of my puppy, Ragz who is also being taught with these methods.

Pryor has created tables for the eight methods that can be used to get rid of a bunch of undesirable behaviours and explains the pros and cons of each one.

It might be tempting, reading this review to think that the book is about manipulating people or animals. People attempt to manipulate others' behaviour anyway, often unsuccessfully by yelling, punishing, negative reinforcement or ignoring the behaviour (and seething inside!) The information in this book provides you with methodologies that make sense and that you can use immediately to achieve rapid results.

I highly recommend you read it, put the principles and methodologies to use and notice how quickly the relationships improve with the people and pets you have in your life.

For Dogs, Kids, Parents, Teachers, and Dolphins

Don't Shoot the Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training is much more than a training book for pets or animals. It is a book that will teach you how to change your own behavior, your children's behavior, your pets behavior, or even a sea lion's behavior.

This book came highly recommended to me, or I probably would never have picked it up. The title certainly makes it look like just a dog training book, and most of the examples do relate to animals. However, this quick read is also a goldmine of the two best kinds of information: valuable and practical.

The purpose of this book is to convince you that positive reinforcement is the best way to shape behavior. Chapter 2 lays out 10 Rules for Shaping. "Shaping consists of taking a very small tendency in the right direction and shifting it, one small step at a time, toward an ultimate goal." (35) These rules can help you do a variety of things for yourself and others. The personal examples that the author lists through her experiences training marine animals and teaching students hold your attention and are varied enough to appeal to everyone.

Chapter 4 lists the eight methods that you can use to change behavior (the first is Shoot The Dog). These methods are comprehensive and will help you think about how you react to everyone around you. Each of the eight methods include a chart detailing various problems and how to use each method to change them. The problems that are tackled include a dirty roommate, noisy kids on a car ride, lazy employees, a faulty tennis swing, a spouse's bad mood, an ornery cat, and adult children that aren't self-sufficient. Intensely practical problems . . . this chapter will change the way you think about raising your kids. Just being able to visually compare punishment with seven other methods of behavioral change is eye-opening. These eight methods were the highlight of the book for me and helped to shed light on how my reactions were reinforcing negative behavior in others. They are:

Shoot the animal
Punishment
Negative Reinforcement
Extinction
Train an incompatible behavior
Put the behavior on cue
Shape the absence
Change the motivation

The last two chapters detail more real world environments and how these lessons can be applied. The author also answers the objections raised by some that training is a form of brainwashing. She clearly lays out the facts in these chapters and shows that we are always training someone to do something. This book just helps us to be aware of how we are affecting others around us and what to do about it.

This book is highly recommended. It is one that I will refer back to repeatedly in the future.

Loved it, as well as Reaching the Animal Mind by same author

This should be the "go to" book before any human touches an animal. It not only gives a new (well, new to me) outlook on how to teach your dog, it provides a means of achieving real communication in the absence of a mutual verbal language. Clicker can work with any animal, and I especially like the idea of using it with people. I've gone into more detail in reviewing "Reaching the Animal Mind" if anyone would like to read that. To make a long story short, both of these books are outstanding and should be read by anyone interested in training animals, no matter how much of a "professional" they may be. I hope we humans realize that we are never so smart that there is nothing left to learn!

About the Author
Joel Karty earned his B.S. in chemistry at the University of Puget Sound and his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry at Stanford University. He joined the faculty at Elon University in 2001, where he currently holds the rank of associate professor. He teaches primarily the organic chemistry sequence and also teaches general chemistry and physical chemistry. In the summers, Joel teaches at the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program through the Duke University medical center. His research interests include investigating the roles of resonance and inductive effects in fundamental chemical systems and studying the mechanism of pattern formation in Liesegang reactions. Love this book!

I took organic chem (Chem 112A) this semester and used this book. I haven't used any other book so I can't compare this to some other good books like Louden, but I definitely think this is a very good book! It explains everything clearly. You understand the reactions and mechanisms inside out. Takes about reactions in layman language (in my opinion, since I didn't encounter any complex terms) so anyone can learn even if you're not a chem genius! I would recommend this book to people who are studying chemistry and want to dive into organic chem. The book you use for ochem is mostly chosen by the professor but in case someone wants to independently study o chem, this is a good book. Problems are woven into the text which help learn the materially better since you get the absorb each concept before moving onto the next one. Back problems are great, too. I suggest buying the solutions manual with the book, really accelerates learning!
Overall, loved the book.

A few years ago, I interviewed a Delaware state trooper named Butch LeFebvre who’d been assigned to investigate rumors that a mountain lion was roaming the outskirts of Wilmington. It was silly, of course--big cats had been wiped out on the East Coast more than a century ago. But just to be safe, LeFebvre strapped on night-vision goggles, loaded a rifle with a tranquilizer dart, and set off into the woods behind the Du Pont Country Club. By 3 A.M, he’d spotted nothing, so he headed back to his truck. The next evening, he returned to the same spot for another look--and found paw tracks following his footprints all the way back to where he’d parked. LeFebvre was an experienced hunter, but he learned something that night: one killer out there was doing a great job of watching and thinking and learning, and it wasn’t him.

To this day, the Wilmington lion has never attacked or even emerged from the suburban shadows. Not so lucky, however, is the Siberian village in John Vaillant’s chilling The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. In 1997, deep in the remote Russian backcountry, a gigantic Amur tiger begins acting like the only thing more savage than a wild animal--us. It doesn’t just attack villagers; it hunts them, picking its targets like a hitman with a contract, at one point even dragging a mattress out of a shack so it can lie comfortably in wait until the woodsman returns home. A few days later, the woodsman’s horrified friends discover remains “so small and so few they could have fit in a shirt pocket.”

Vaillant is as masterful with science as he is with suspense. We feel what it’s like to be in a tiny settlement cut off from the rest of the world, at the mercy of a beast so swift that it can’t be seen until its mouth bites down on your face. Tigers, Vaillant explains, are nature’s last word in mammalian weapons design. Big as three NFL linebackers bundled into one, armed with claws longer than fingers and jaws rated on a strength-scale used for dinosaurs, tigers are built like missiles and can out-swim, out-climb, out-fox and out-run just about anything that breathes. That’s the bad news; the worse news is, they’re also armed with memory and invisibility. “I have seen all the other animals,” one poacher says, “but I have never seen a tiger--not once.”

What enthralled me as much as the deadly cat-and-man game at the center of The Tiger are the side-stories that inform it. Vaillant introduces us to characters like Jakob von Uexkull, a Victorian-era baron-turned-physiologist who specialized in umwelt: the lost art of immersing yourself in another creature’s psyche. You crouch to the height of the animal you’re seeking, learning to see the world through its eyes, inhale scents through its nostrils, feel cool earth and crushed leaves beneath its padded paws. There are hunters in Siberia, Vaillant tells us, who can sniff the woods and identify animals by smell. These maestros believe killing a tiger without cause is as vile as murder, and such a violation of natural order that calamity is destined to follow. They feel such kinship with the big cats that they’ll even share their meals by leaving hunks of meat in the woods, convinced the tigers will re-pay them in kind with a deer haunch when times are lean. They see themselves as blood brothers of the Amurs--but as Vaillant shows us, no one fights more fiercely than relatives.

The Amur tiger, weighing 500 pounds with four-inch claws and now numbering only around 400 in the Russian Far East, is certainly a formidable creature, and Vaillant gives the animal the respect it deserves in this unusual true-crime tale. Critics agreed that The Tiger is nature writing and reporting at its best, mesmerizing and insightful into both the threatened natural and human worlds. "Think of Vaillant as a younger version of John McPhee," wrote the Seattle Times, "but on steroids." The only complaint came from the Oregonian, which accused Vaillant of unnecessary padding. But all reviewers appreciated Vaillant's moral and highly recommended the book: "When you murder a tiger, you not only kill a strong and beautiful beast, you extinguish a passionate soul" (Washington Post).

A nonfiction wildlife thriller in a remote Siberian setting

"The Tiger" by John Vaillant is many things, but foremost it is a nonfiction thriller in which the central characters are a very large Tiger and the disparate characters in far eastern Russia with whom the Tiger interacts. As events unfold and the suspense builds the reader is increasingly unable to stop reading. How will this end? Who will survive?

Along the way we learn much about the remote and forested Primorsky Krai region which holds Vladivostok at its tip. In my high school history class in the early 1960's I had learned about Vladivostok as Russia's most important Pacific port and as the termination of the Trans-Siberian railway. This piece of Russia borders Manchurian China and North Korea and is close to Japan. The Tiger taught me much more about this region, and the people who came here for lots of different reasons under a relatively prosperous Soviet experience but then were abandoned to a more primitive survival under Perestroika.

We also learn a lot about the Amur Tiger subspecies which is concentrated partly in the mountains of the Primorsky Krai. The Amur Tiger population is barely holding its own as forces of conservation and poaching compete. Tiger products have high commercial value in China, which is right across a long and porous border. We learn as well about the long and sometimes spiritual relationship between man and tiger.

Few who pick this book up will be disappointed. It holds special appeal to nature lovers as well as those intrigued by geography and history. The Tiger thriller story line is blended seamlessly with the wildlife, history and geography background. A very large number of difficult-to-pronounce Russian names may seem challenging, but in fact less than a hand full of these names need to be remembered through the story.

Fascinating book.This true story is about a man- eating Tiger..however,all the aspects of it(geography,Russian/Siberian history/species adaptations,life on the Taiga,the role of predator and prey,native knowledge,weather,"umwelt")are so thought-provoking and challenging that long after you finish the book you will be pondering everything the author has tied together in this story.The author uses words in such a way that you can see the Taiga,feel the bitter cold,and get a sense of what it's like when this Tiger is stalking you..and waiting for you... because the Tiger sees you before you see the Tiger..Bravo..John Vaillant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved this book

I loved this book. I read an excerpt of it in a magazine and I was hooked. I bought it and read it in a few days. It's a great window into an animal and a part of the world that I didn't know anything about but found fascinating. It's years later and I still think about the environment and characters in this book, and the atmosphere the author created in this story. The book is for anyone looking for a great read - a great story well told.

Extraordinarily comforting and enlightening

This book remains a great source of wisdom and comfort, still needed after 15 years living abroad. The cultural differences aren't obvious any longer -- they can be deceptively subtle -- now that language and the daily facts of life are no longer an issue. However, I still trip over matters which I later realize to be cultural differences, and I assume others in similar situations do as well. And then I pull down Mr. Storti's book from the shelf and put it all into some sort of workable perspective.
Highly recommended to others, even those who have no intention of going abroad but would just like to have a better understanding of the cultural differences in this world -- something sorely needed these days.
By the way, Western women so quick to judge the 'sad' reality of women in Arab societies might do well to read this quotation from Harriet Martineau:
"[The women of the harem] pitied us European women heartily, that we had to go about travelling, and appearing in the streets without being properly taken care of -- that is, watched. They think us strangely neglected in being left so free, and boast of [how closely they are watched] as a token of the value in which they are held."
It should be a sobering reminder that it's a fools' game to judge, and certainly to pity, the reality of a person from a culture foreign to ours.

Effective reading!

I have been an expatriate myself and i found the book extremely effective and well written, and most important: easy to read. I think everybody should read it before expatriating to avoid the first, most of the time negative, impact with another culture. The author makes you really understand the most common feelings, mistakes and fault you may do once you move in a new country, new culture. Most of all, he makes you understand how rich and full of challenge is an experience in another country. I think that most of the expatriates do not even acknowledge how brave they are in living in a different culture. However the book is useful for everybody, as our world is more and more crossing cultures oriented.

Must read for hardcore Oasis fans

If you love Oasis you will love this read. Paolo Heweitt was there in the right place, at the top of Oasis' career. They were touring 'Be Here Now', the album that put them on the top of the world, in mainstream music terms. The hotel life, the buzz, the drugs, the battle of egos between Liam and Noel is all around the book, fuelled by the growing tension of being one of the most succesful acts but at the same time the press stalking them everywhere and the main critics turning down their new album. Record sales were high and tickets all sold out, but still the band struggled with the fact that they couldn't get any bigger and eventually they would have to face the comedown of such high. There are lots of talking about the future (with Noel even hinting a solo career). All in all, is a fun read with lots of anecdotes and great moments, as well as madness and bizarre from our heroes. The author (Paolo Hewitt) is not that much of a writer itself but he delivers well. If you grew up listening to Oasis or you're still a big fan of their music, you will dig this read.

Was a good book. You can put yourself on the edge of the band and hear what cause rock stars to fall. Felt like I was sitting at the end of the bar listening to fights and talks.

Badly written, short and dull

First of all I cannot comprehend that a man whose sole occupation as a writer can present such tedious language. The book is short, with lots of space on those few pages, left white. Even if the puspose of the book was to write about a year on the road with Oasis, and that everyday turns into routine over and over. It's simply here you separate the talented from the hustlers. "And then we went to the bar, went shopping, planes are like taxis for us, geezers, lightweights, coffee, hungover." Write something with a twist!

This is by far the most lazy work of journalism I've ever encountered. And I've read a ton biographies, and books on tours. Check out Stanley Booth's book on The Stones 1969 US tour or Greenfeild's document of the same band's 1972 American escapedes. They are great writer's, especially Booth, and even if the tour becomes a circle of routines, his language and style suck you into a style of prose that couldn't be more far apart from this circulated tripe. If you claim to be a writer, write well. I don't care how many friends you have in the music world. That is not a sole excuse to write for a living. I know the authour has had a long background the British music press, and have written a few other books. If they are as boring as this, then he should change his professional profile and thank his lucky stars that he's made a living out of it.

This was probably an attempt to cash in on the madness of Oasis' popularity, in England, at the the time and get to travel the world.

In short, don't buy this book. It's a dull cash in.
