Nate and I have developed and nurtured several enterprise applications, some of which we're sure would be even better on Azure.� The problem was convincing our bosses.� How would we explain Azure?� What features make Azure better than a traditional on-premises application?� What kind of extra work would be involved with Azure development?� Are there downsides to Azure?� Our discussions of how to answer these questions led to this book.

Richard has been developing with Microsoft technologies since 1998, and today works with a variety of technologies, including SQL Server, ASP.NET, Azure, Windows Phone 7 and LightSwitch. With his wife Kathy, Richard is also co-owner of The Bloomery Florist in Butler, PA.
Nathan Duchene
Nathan Duchene is an Application Developer for Armada Supply Chain Solutions, a logistics company based in Pittsburgh, PA. Nice introductory book for Windows Azure

I had the privilege to read and make a small review of the "Microsoft Azure: Enterprise Application Development", from Richard J. Dudley, Nathan A. Duchene published by PACKT Publishing (ISBN 978-1-849680-98-1) on December 2010.

I spent enough time reading the book, and I strongly believe it's a very nice book, for the following reasons:

- It has a very nice structure, that helps readers become familiar with both Cloud and Microsoft's Cloud Platform offering (Windows Azure), even if they had never heard about this term. I really liked the statement "No cloud computing platform can be all things to all people", since there is a lot of noise and different interpretation of Cloud, either by vendors or by nature (public vs. private) [Chapter 1: Introduction to Cloud Computing]
- "Explaining Azure to the managers" was a nice surprise, since they demystify all new aspects of Azure [Chapter 2: The Nickel Tour of Azure]
- The authors provide detailed information on how to setup the development environment and create Windows Azure account, which is very helpful, especially for beginners [Chapter 3: Setting Up for Development]
- They also provide enough resources for third party tools and Microsoft programs, either CTPs or on codeplex.com, that can be useful to all
- In SQL Azure, I liked the feature comparison between this version and SQL Server 2008 (on premise). If you consider migrating your database on Azure, then you'll find this information useful, since besides feature comparison they briefly cover other important areas like Security, Manageability, Scalability and High Availability, Data Synchronization and Data Migration. [Chapter 5: Introduction to SQL Azure]
Microsoft offers several storage options, BLOBs, Tables and Queues, besides the relational SQL Azure database, and there are useful information in each option. It's interesting to note how to create a new BLOB storage, how to use the REST API for BLOB storage [Chapter 6: Azure Blob Storage].
- "Table Storage versus database tables" is another interesting section in Table storage since it highlights some key conceptual differences using simple examples, limitations of this storage type, exception handling and use of REST API [Chapter 7: Azure Table Storage].
- Although I'm not sure how familiar you might be with Queues (it's a very interesting pattern for asynchronous communication between applications or systems), but in case you are not, you will find interesting the "Reasons to use a queue" section [Chapter 8: Queue Storage]
- Similarities of ASP.NET and Web role in Azure and "Application diagnostics and logging in the cloud" are some interesting parts on [Chapter 9: Web Role], especially the association of log files and storage options. The sample application is fine, but I would prefer if C# had been used instead of VB.NET.
- If you are not familiar with WCF and endpoints, you will find helpful the notes in sample code and configuration files, as well as the brief introductions in contracts (Service, Operation and Data) [Chapter 10: Web Services and Azure]
Worker role is an interesting offering and there are some useful information in [Chapter 11: Worker Roles] like "Uses of worker roles", "Thread pools", "Management", the use of non-IIS servers ("Externally facing worker roles", although there are not enough details on how to achieve that), and recommendations for best practices.
- The most interesting feature of Windows Azure is AppFabric, and the book covers the main uses of it: Access Control and Service Bus. The `claims based authentication' and use of Tokens are explained in a well-understood way and the sample configuration is very useful for your first attempt to use this service. Regarding Service Bus, the focus is on using this service for message relay (`to connect our systems with Service Bus, and use the Service Bus as our public endpoint') and as a connection broker (`The service bus then facilitates the two connections, finding a common protocol on which to communicate, and the two applications then use a direct connection'). [Chapter 13: Azure AppFabric]
- Since monitoring and diagnostics are important components of a successful implementation and deployment, the information and resources provided in [Chapter 14: Azure Monitoring and Diagnostics] are very helpful.
- Finally, the entire deployment process is nicely described, especially the various environments (Staging, Production), with detailed information (screen-shots) that help a lot [Chapter 15: Deploying to Windows Azure].

Overall it is a well-written book, that can cover many features of Windows Azure offering and can be evaluated by both managers and developers/IT pros as a reference book. In order to gain more insight on the development parts, you will have to create a Windows Azure account, deploy the sample application, and extend it based on your own needs/requirements.

Taking into consideration all of the above, I highly recommend it as a must-have book for Windows Azure introduction (level 200) book

Nice concise overview of Microsoft Azure

The book is a nice concise overview of Microsoft Azure. I have not had any clients express interested in the cloud yet. They are not willing to hear about giving up the control over their environments which is a stigma the cloud conversation carries with it. I still wanted to know what is going on with Azure, without having to spend 2 months mulling through a tome. This book was the perfect size and depth for getting me up to speed quickly.

The book is intended to give you enough information to decide whether or not further movement toward the cloud is something you want to do, and it does that perfectly.

The book starts off with an overview of cloud computing, an introduction to Azure, and covers setting up a development environment. After that the rest of the book designs and builds a sample application which is used to introduce the key components of Microsoft Azure.

The book has a chapter on each of the following topics- Azure Blob Storage, Azure Table Storage, Queue Storage, Web Role, Web Services and Azure, Worker Roles, Local Application for Updates, Azure AppFabric, Azure Monitoring and Diagnostics, and Deploying to Windows Azure.

Most chapters introduces the topic and then show a working example. The others that just describe the topic describe it in enough detail that you have a good understanding of the topic and they provide good references if you want to dig deeper.

The book did a really good job covering the different types of services and different types of storage available. It also did a great job of describing the differences in SQL Server and SQL Azure.

All in all I thought this book did exactly what it set out to do. It provided me with enough information that I now feel like I know what Microsoft Azure is all about.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an introduction the Microsoft Azure platform.

Misleading title

The book is a good (but outdated) introduction to Azure development and does a good job of explaining the various components of Azure and their relationships. However, I was disappointed with the title of the book and it's contents. From the title, I was expecting the book to tack topics such as:

- Change Management
- Monitoring
- Release Management
- Integration
- Identity Management

and other topics relevant to enterprise development. These topics were either glossed over or not covered in this book.

About the Author

Elizabeth D. Hutchison, MSW, PhD, received her MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis and her PhD from the University at Albany, State University of New York. She was on the faculty in the Social Work Department at Elms College from 1980 to 1987, and served as chair of the department from 1982 to 1987. She was on the faculty in the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University from 1987 to 2009, where she taught courses in human behavior and the social environment, social work and social justice, and child and family policy; she also served as field practicum liaison. She has been a social worker in health, mental health, aging, and child and family welfare settings. She is committed to providing social workers with comprehensive, current, and useful frameworks for thinking about human behavior. Her other research interests focus on child and family welfare. She currently lives in Rancho Mirage, California where she is active in environmental justice issues facing farm workers in East Coachella Valley.

Holly C. Matto, M.S.W., Ph.D., received her M.S.W from the University of Michigan and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. Holly is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she teaches courses in Human Behavior and the Social Environment and research methodology. Her social work practice experience and current research interests are in substance abuse treatment.

Leanne W. Charlesworth, LMSW, Ph.D., received her M.S.W from the University at Albany and PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University. Leanne is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at Nazareth College of Rochester, where she teaches a variety of courses including Human Behavior and the Social Environment. She has served in child protection and other capacities within child welfare systems and has been an evaluation consultant to diverse public and private human service agencies. Her research and practice interests focus on poverty, child and family well-being, and child welfare system issues.

Pamela A. Viggiani, LMSW, Ph.D., received her M.S.W. and her PhD from the University at Albany. Pamela is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Social Work at Nazareth College of Rochester where she teaches courses in Social Justice, Social Advocacy, Diversity, Policy, and Social Work Methods. She has worked in schools with at risk children and has served as the legislative liaison for the National Association of Social Workers, New York State Chapter. Pamela also has served as an evaluator and consultant for several grants funding public child welfare professionalization. Her research focuses on poverty, and pedagogy.

Jane P. Mallor has taught business law at Indiana University since 1976. During that time she has received many teaching awards, including the Student Alumni Council Senior Faculty Award, the Faculty Colloquium for Excellence in Teaching, and the Amoco Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching.

A. James Barnes is Dean and Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He previously won a distinguished teaching award from Indiana University’s School of Business.

Arlen W. Langvardt, currently Associate Professor of Business Law at Indiana University, received several teaching awards and in 1989 received the Holmes/Cardozo Award from the Academy of Legal Studies in Business.

All the world's children have the same wants and needs

I am a Lutheran church librarian and I am glad I bought this very satisfactory book for our church library. Its text stresses that children are the same the world over. They have the same feelings and needs, and have the same hopes and dreams. The illustrations are a nice change from the usual. Each page is surrounded by a gold picture frame in which faux jewels are embedded. The illustrations appear to be tempera or opaque watercolor, drawn in Persian style. The colors are very saturated. The book's cover gives you an idea of what they look like. The message of this book is one of diversity--that even though children live in different parts of the world and may have different nationalities, races, ethnicities, languages or faiths, they still have the same hopes, dreams and daily needs. This is a very important message for children to hear in today's world where there is so much suspicion of those we "perceive" to be different. The more children realize that kids are the same everywhere, the more tolerant they will be. Children pick up prejudice by the time they are three years of age, say researchers, so you have to nip it in the bud very early, and this book does that in a wonderful way.

This is who we are...

As the home educator of children from toddler to pre-school, representing a wide range of cultures, this wonderful inclusive book is soothing and almost prayerful. I discovered it on a list of books recommended by Heifer.org, a non-profit organization bringing respectful solutions to many nations affected by poverty. The drawings by Leslie Staub, gently framed with "jewelled" borders, are universal. The text, by Mem Fox, reaches deep inside of us. Indeed, every child, every adult, has hearts that are "just the same" regardless of all the differences that separate us. It is hard to imagine anyone who can think war is the answer to anything, after reading this book. I heartily recommend it.

Teaching We Are All One Family

" Little one, whoever you are, wherever you are, there are little ones just like you all over the world." This very simple opening starts a paean to the universality of the human experience. As humans we experience sadness and joy, tears and laughter, and it is these common experiences that unite all people for "their words may be very different from yours. But inside, their hearts are just like yours."
Staub's illustrations seem to underscore this message. Diverse people, lands, and languages are presented in a folk art style with surrealistic touches. Our guide through these pages is a man in a "cloud" suit who carries four children of different races as they view people all over the world. But what unifies the poem, beside the guide, is that each of the pictures is placed in a hand-carved frame with encased gems. It feels like we are looking at pictures of someone's family. That the human race is a family is also underscored with these framed pictures. This would be an excellent book for teaching tolerance and understanding of others.

Researched based book on the health benefits of early eating, and eating just 2 meals a day

In raw food leader Paul Nison's new book, The Daylight Diet, I found some exciting new pieces to the health puzzle: don't eat anything after sunset! Never eat when it is dark. Eat less food, and only two meals a day. If at all possible, eat breakfast in the third hour of daylight (usually around 8 to 9 AM) and have your last meal six hours later, at the ninth hour of daylight (usually around 2 to 3 PM). Give up that bad habit of snacking. What this does is give your digestive system a long rest between meals. Then after your late lunch/early dinner, you have about 17 or 18 hours of fasting which enables your body to cleanse and heal, doing its housecleaning. You also get a much, much deeper sleep when your body is not trying to digest food while you rest.

Paul explains that there is a direct connection between the optic nerve and digestion: "When sunlight hits the optic nerve, electrical impulses are transmitted, activating many processes of the body, including digestion. Nerve impulses send messages that tell the body to produce certain enzymes, gastric juices, and other processes of digestion."

"Regardless of the food you eat, if you consistently eat when it is dark outside, your health will never thrive," insists Paul. He evens states that "it is far worse to overeat even high quality food, than to consume low quality foods in small amounts. In other words, it's the quantity that does far more damage than the quality." He explains that he used to eat 7,000 calories a day (yet only weighed 150 pounds, so obviously calories didn't count--some young men can get away with that!)

In order for this to succeed, you will need to cultivate new habits. You can start by not eating after 6 PM and gradually reduce it till it is earlier. Paul realizes this is difficult for those working graveyard shift, but explains that it is thus called for a reason, and you should try to work days if at all possible. You will also have to eat high nutrition, since you will be consuming less food. Paul gives a formula for figuring out the exact best times for you to eat, based on his years of experience with this diet.

For the early eating and two meals, Paul cites historical health teachers, including Dr. Dio Lewis from 1850 and Luigi Cornaro from the 1500s. He quotes many others on the benefits of eating sparsely with high nutrition. (Actually there have been hundreds of studies since the 1930s that support this claim.) He cites the historical customs of eating this way in Europe until the 1600s and goes into the history of how meals evolved. As you may imagine, the Industrial Revolution was a major setback in our eating routines.

You think it's hard to eat less and earlier? Wait until you hear this: Paul also wants us to give up TV, computers and video games for the last three hours before we sleep. (OK, food yes--but the Internet? And night TV is when I do my trampoline, yoga and facial exercises!) Paul explains how TV, sugar, caffeine and computers create adrenal fatigue and also interfere with sleep.
In addition, there are chapters with information on the daily detox, monitoring your health, how to deal with social situations, and a plan for how to get started.

I have already gone 7 months without eating after 6 PM, and have noted great health and sleep benefits! But this book is inspiring me to make it 5 PM and later 4. I am always looking for ways to get to the next level of superior health and found this book very inspiring. Great work, Paul!

An Innovative Publication With a Remarkable Message of Health and Harmony

It is against your well being not only to eat too much but to do so at nighttime.

His argument is that in order to function properly the stomach requires periods of rest, some other writers advise fasting yet Nison emphasizes the need to harmonize eating with sunlight that eating at night set the digestive system at work during the sleeping hours, routine that upset both the digestion, the sleeping process and mental/physical daytime energy.

The off the mark practice of eating after dark detracts from our physical balance and strength and emotional energy, that eating at night is detrimental not only to the mind and body but also upsetting the daytime activity hours.

Tonya Zavasta in Quantum Eating recommends not taking any food after two o'clock in the afternoon, which is what I have been doing for the last couple of months with excellent results.

Beyond Inspiring!

This book is beyond inspiring! Not only does it make you want to dive right into your goals, but it gives you the tools to do it. The author is so positive and motivating. The examples he gives are very easy to relate to. This book shows you that you don't have to be a superhero or "wait till the time is right" to start moving towards your vision. He gives you the step-by-step path to start TODAY to reach your goals. I suggest the reader keep the journal that the author suggests, as it is very helpful. This is not a "superficial" motivational book. It was written by a real, everyday person who has achieved great things with hard work and determination, and shares his recipe with the reader so that he or she can do the same.

About the Author
Simon Needham was in the Royal Marines for�22 years, has been involved in archery for 40�years, and has been shooting competitively since 1989. He has represented Scotland at archery since 1989, culminating in representing his adoptive country in 2010 at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Great Britain from 1997-2008. He competed at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, ranking 7th at the World Championships in 2001, with 12th being his best world ranking.
